Do these look fake, PSA slabs?

Guy on blowout football board says he got sent fake PSA 9 rookies of Ryan, Jordan, Rice in sealed holders.
Here is a link to the thread, interesting read so far and it just started.

Some think this is easy to spot. But with everything that has happend in the past, I wish there was a site or a gallery of what to look for. This is something that we all can benifit from by learning what to look for. Thanks for the post. I really wish PSA gave us some info on this topic though. PSA case history and how to tell if a case has been messed with.

The first thing I noticed was the labels. On each of them, the spaces (between 1986 and Topps, for example) are larger than normal. Or, did PSA once use large spacing like that?

    Thanks for that link TNP.

So I wonder what the guy does with them. I would think PSA will want all info of the guy who traded these to him and try and trace back to where they came from.

PSA is just getting killed in that thread.

it's been suggested before, but a 29.95 PSA Premium slab for these types of cards is something that many larger collectors would welcome, be a new (profitable) price point item for PSA while still maintaining the broader market thru the regular slabs, and be a concrete initiative that would seriously address this problem for top-dollar cards. plus, if its successful, elements of it can be scaled down to the regular slabs. win-win all around.

    That is a great idea!

I suspect that PSA's position on a slab overhaul is: Profits w/o change > profits w/ change. Therefore: no change.

PSA will need to see a real threat from BGS or SGC before they'll make a move. That's all there is to it.

I agree digicat, which is why adding a new product that still meshes with the registry is likely much more preferable from their side than merely overhauling the existing product. it also gets around the pesky problem of angry customers who all of a sudden find themselves with 'outdated' slabs if the basic slab is changed markedly.

edited to add: and a smart business doesn't wait around for threats from the competition to look for new opportunities - they blaze the trail.

PSA slabs have been flawed for years.

Is the PSA brand a significant part of Collectors Universe's income? It was always my understanding that they got a majority of their revenue from their coin grading brand.

CLCT's most recent 10Q filing shows coins as 62% of their business in 2012, down from 67%. coins are shrinking, cards are stable.

Same guy oasis1994 id ...tried to sell the card to Handyman...I pulled this scan when he post on this board. Notice two pins are popped on the bottom of the card and font on flip is wrong!!

I like the idea of the "premium holder". Obviously thicker, closer to a bgs holder. The design would also have the ability to "stack" with the current holder.

I stopped buying a lot of expensive graded cards (and recently graded cello packs) a long time ago. Unless I get the item from a pack or know the provenance (or providence..lol), I pass.

I posted a thread a while ago that spoke to this and also to how PSA will NOT reimburse a collector who buys a compromised slab. I know a few collectors who bought resealed slabs that had been polished up very well, with lesser cards inside that seemed okay via scan. PSA told those collectors that the best way to purchase their cards is through PSA authorized dealers. They likened fake or resealed slabs to bootleg/knockoffs of name brand merchandise, i.e., Rolex, Gucci, Vuitton. They said Rolex does not reimburse people who buy fake Rolexes on Canal Street in Manhattan. If you want a Rolex you know is legit you should buy it at an authorized Rolex store.

That's great. I guess when you sell your collection you have to give it to a PSA authorized dealer too. How wonderful!

Time for Beckett to step up their game. Their holder is the best in the business.

so this dirtbag posts on this forum?
  • These are very obvious fakes. Counterfeit PSA labels, compromised real PSA holders and counterfeit cards.

The card itself is also counterfeit? This Ryan I can't tell, looks trimmed if anything. The back of the PSA label would be significantly harder to replicate compared to the front (which he obviously struggled with) my guess is that they have just glued a real one on. If you had this in hand I am betting the edge of the flip looks different from a normal card.

Seems fair on PSA's part. Why should they reimburse a forgery? It has nothing to do with them, really. At best, PSA would do something to prevent forgery in the future, but I dont think it is in their jurisdiction to reimburse fake slabs. That's a losing proposition. The seller who sold the forgery should be doing the reimbursement, not PSA.

Very troubling news for graded card collectors. I hope those responsible for the fakes are held criminally responsible..

PSA does have those bigger holders they use for thicker/jersey cards. Those seem to be tamper proof. Never heard of one of those being faked. So they must have toyed with ideas on remaking better slabs.

So Ryan card has shown up before. Have that Rice and Jordan been moved around before?
