Why does this hobby consume me ?

Check ebay in the morning. Check ebay at night. Always looking for something cool and new.
Not saying it's a bad thing. Heck, it's not gambling, drinking, or smoking, and I only use available funds and don't go overboard.

But I do love to talk, hear stories, see what's happening with others, and keep an eye out for something that would go nicely with my collection.

What is it about this hobby ? Is it just because it reminds us of our childhood ? Heck, I could watch ME-TV all day for that fix.
Is it the pursuit of finding that perfectly centered card ?

What is it ?

Well it's partly because its fun.

Also partly because ALL collectors have at least tinges of OCD.

  • If it makes you feel better, I think most of the people reading your message will view checking ebay only in the morning and at night as being light activity.

    because we're fans.

most of us have participated in sports to some degree and must live vicariously through the accomplishments of others greater than we.

loving the game(s) never goes away, and there is always something available to hang onto as a reminder.

without our trinkets and hobby toys, what else would we discuss?

Checking a few times a day would definitely be considered light activity.

    My Giants collection want list

WTB: 2001 Leaf Rookies & Stars Longevity: Ryan Jensen #/25
  • If I do not check ebay every lunch break or 15 minute break on my phone at work, then there is definitely something wrong! And when my phone doesnt load BBCE fast enough I get upset in front of my co-workers. It is very awkward but I don't seem to care! I won't even mention what my wife says when I am online at 5:30 in the morning on Sunday.
I collect vintage PSA graded SF Giants, Willie Mays, McCovey, Cepeda, Marichal and Perry. And modern players like Buster Posey, Will Clark and Barry Bonds.

  • Why do we collect?

To capture a moment of our baseball childhood?

Maybe its mans innate drive to hunt and gather. There might be something here, how many female collectors do you know?? You know primitive conscience stuff….. always on the search for something – fire, saber tooth tiger meat, cardboard, etc. Too deep?

I shut my Ebay account down almost 2 years ago because I was spending WAY too much time looking for cards I wanted. I didn't need Ebay...I was not consumed by cardboard. Joining those new forums and registering on a couple of auction sites helped me prove I didn't need it! image

    Why do I collect?

    It's a blend of:

    1. intellectual curiosity

    2. the desire to acquire

    3. the need to catalog and organize things - since I have no control over the chaos in the surrounding world

    4. perhaps looking for immortality thru passing my collection on?

    5. a little bit of showin' off?

    6. Mostly - I just like the idea of connecting with the past - the "nostalgia" - makes me feel like the kids in the picture.

Very well said. I would also add the chase/thrill of opening a new pack, and the relative ease to grow and impressive collection. For 30-50 a month you can build a great collection over a decade or less, and you have me.
I cannot hit curveball. Straightball I hit it very much. Curveball, bats are afraid.
