Picked up a '71 partial set - opinions wanted

Hi there, I recently picked up a partial set of 71 baseball. Its from a co-workers father. Probably about 500-600 different. Mostly Ex-Mt, some better, a few worse, but no VG. I scanned the two best cards below and would like to ask a few opinions:

1. what are the likely grades?
2. is it worth grading them at all?
3. I noticed a couple of cards have the black marker ink marks on the borders: Munson and Mays - which is a shame because they were really decent cards to begin with. Are these marked cards completely worthless now?

Thanks in advance for your input

sounds like someone recolored some of the cards.

I wouldn't grade 6's on this set - so anything with more than one corner touch is probably not worth it for you. Touched up 71's aren't worthless to raw set collectors, but are probably worth half to a third of a clean example when disclosed. Clemente is close.. maybe a 6.5.

Very nice. I'd say the two above would grade in the 5 to 6 range. They have great eye appeal with fabulous centering. PSA is very tough on this issue especially with corners. That is what I see as the biggest "ding" for the pair. But with the centering you might get a 6.5. A 7 will be tough in my opinion.

The marked cards obviously will not grade; they would have some value but it will be significantly lower than if they were not touched up. While its hard to say, you might be able to get around 20 or so bucks each for the marked cards.

    Very nice pickup!

Yes, it is very likely this gentleman bought these this way unknowingly from some unscrupulous dealer. I have reviewed all the stars very closely and only found a few: munson, mays, kaline, carew, and marichal with any coloring.

Thanks Mike and Matt. I will post it on the B/S/T here first...disclosing of course! Its a really clean set and those unmarked cards are very representative of most of the set. Look at this beautiful munson that they colored on the lower left side from the corner up for about 1 cm! what a shame!

A $5 battery operated black light from ebay is best for suspected recolors.

Lack of uniformity in the black - if it looks different under the UV it is likely sharpie. Smart guys can recolor without bleeding onto the edges - which is the usual giveaway - and the black is not always uniform under regular light due to printing imperfections. Under the UV it should all look alike though.

edit: Nice Mays... too bad somebody got greedy!

I know for a fact that retouched 71s are not worthless. I have sold a good number of them on eBay (with full disclosure). Some have done better than others, but there are people who will buy them. As long as you disclose the fact that they were altered, you shouldn't have a problem.

My best sale was a Clemente that probably would've been in the 4-6 range that went for around $20. A real shame that it was treated like a coloring book too.
I'm building a 1968 and a 1970 Topps set. I have lots of 1970s and 1960s to offer in trade.

The '71 set can be tough to collect in so many ways. People do love the challenge of this great set.

    The 1971 Clemente's in 4-5 range have a value?

I have one thats a tad beat...haven't looked at a price guide in ages...I thought it was just about worthless(under $5). I know I looked at the auctions for some 7's and they went pretty damned high...but i just thought thats due to the nature of the 1971 cards......
