Problem is, I ended up giving them all to my kids so I wouldn't have to look at them.

Geez - don't think you're the only one.
On principle, I would throw them away before selling at that price.
<< <i>$6 for 5000 cards? That offer is so low it is insulting. Who is paying the postage on that? A box that holds 5000 cards costs around $5.

Agreed, or donate them.

If anyone ever sold him commons at that price, I sure hope it was in-person.
<< <i>at least you didn't sell dozens of these pack fresh for $20 each and think you were cleaning up. oops. >>
Highly unlikely story.
Have they been highly sought after for a while?
<< <i>Apology accepted. >>
Another fantasy oops moment for you?
<< <i>Dpeck, they've been $200+ since being released. And nobody had "dozens" of them. >>
My memory was off a little. Miklia is correct that it took a few years to get to the $200 level. But I stand by my comment that nobody had dozens of them.

I got pretty heavy into MTG in 1994 a few months after Revised was released. One of the local card shops had an Unlimited Black Lotus in somewhat "played" condition sitting in it's display case for $195. Unfortunately, as a poor high school senior growing up in the 'hood with no income, I could only drool at it every week. It was there for about a month before it vanished.

sigh. i don't know why I'm even bothering, but if only to knock out the other leg out of the crippled hunchback that is your argument Levi..
when we first started selling a lot of magic, unlimited was in full swing and we were holding tourneys at each of our stores, the only places in the region really doing so at the time. it brought a lot of demand, and a lot of buyers. to give an example of what it was like then, a big debate was whether using penny sleeves should be allowed or if the cards had to be shuffled and played like playing cards. you see, it was still thought of then as a game, not a collectible. while WOTC's marketization + gameplay mix was truly genius, at the time players would only pay a small premium for some of the best cards. in addition, the lotus, moxes etc hadn't even been discontinued yet and were thus not commanding insane prices.
me and my biz partner were card guys, not gamers. we saw the rips as basically chasing inserts so we were happy to sell 3-5 cards for $20 each from boxes that wholesaled at about $42 if i remember right ($90+ once they dried up before revised hit). we kept our stores well stocked with the key cards, and if i were to guess i'd say that each one sold an average of one lotus per week for a period of many months, mostly betas and unlimited (now a 3k card in the same condition), but also some alphas every now and then. 4 stores x 3/month x 4 months = at least forty sold between $15-$30, with another 3-4 dozen sold at around $70 or so once demand started increasing. some of these were of course sold, traded in and resold, and most of these got worn out through gameplay, believe it or not. the modern 'card in the bicycle spoke'.
so yeah, dozens.
<< <i>I stand by my comment that no one has 5,000 1977 Topps Tommy John cards.
Finding 8,000 cards of one player from the 1977 set may seem to be an enormous amount in 2013 but even as late as the mid-90's you could purchase a 300-400 count box of just about any late-70's or early-80's Topps card from several sources. There were some exceptions, such as 1977 Fidrych and 1979 Bob Horner and 1981 Fernando, but most of the cards were available in bulk. If someone wanted 8,000 1977 Topps Tommy John cards, it was possible.
Nobody had dozens of Black Lotus cards. Nobody.
You'll see that miklia has now changed his "story" to try to make his claim of dozens seem more plausible by stating "some of these were of course sold, traded in and resold". He knew he dug himself a hole and he probably stayed up all night trying to come up with that.

While not "dozens", I do remember this kid who had 9 Black Lotus cards (mix of Alpha, Beta, and Unlimited) on a 9 pocket binder page. He'd prop it up on the table next to him during tournaments as part of his psychological warfare routine. Maybe he thought that it'd distract his opponent or something.

He was like make sure you know who you are dealing with! I have 9 Black Lotus cards! LOL
Hopefully for his sake he still has them.
<< <i>That is awesome! He was like make sure you know who you are dealing with! I have 9 Black Lotus cards! LOL >>
I'm still not sure which was more impressive, the 9 Lotuses on display, or the obnoxious fat kid who had a fairly attractive girl sitting on his lap and sucking on his face for the duration of the match. Each time it was his turn, he'd make a horny grunt as he'd dislodge his hand from the girls ass to play a card. I actually lost to that guy, so it pissed me off even more.

Was it this guy?

Pff. The resemblance is there.

Sounds like this guy had a great time playing. Gets to flaunt his expensive collection, handful of booty and actually wins the game.
<< <i>Maybe she was impressed with his Black Lotus cards and saw $ signs. >>
No, different guy.
The only thing the Lotus kid won was lustful stares from the other kids.

MTG Tournaments? .... Intense.....I envision Mortal Kombat costumes and at least 1 contestant dressed as a Jedi knight. If there were any girls there at all, it was likely someone's older sister who drove them to the tournament (at the mall).
Always buying Bobby Cox inserts. PM me.

I haven't changed a thing. we sold dozens of unique lotuses (loti?). this is not at all as implausible as you seem to think it is. not sure how you think that while it's unimpeachable that a kid might have 9 lotuses, it's totally impossible to think that the biggest dealer in the area might have had some too.
you sure get testy when someone beats you in the card knowledge game, man.

Mortal Kombat costumes would have been cool. Sadly, the only cos-play that went on were dudes dressed like 16th century vampires and the occasional generic wizard. Once I saw a dude dressed up like Bobba Fett though. Awesome memories.

The memories are enough though. I'd never get back into playing MTG.
