1985 OPC Wrestling Stars Future

Wrestling sure is popular these days, I guess us 30 somethings are looking back to childhood memories and becoming a man to the visor of Elisabeth

Thanks to this board I know the 82 Wrestling stars set is king hands down.

I realize 85 is what it is. No key rookies except for savage but I still like it being a mainstream issue.

Do we have any 85 OPC collectors here? How is this set viewed relative to the Topps? I'm getting into it and recently picked up a series one wax box. Found a hogan #1 on back of a pack which is in for grading. Have a series 2 pack with savage / Elizabeth on back in as well.

Looks to be a lot of unopened Topps still on the market but not so for OPC. Wondering what the future holds for POP reports and if these should shoot up like the 82's

Thanks

The Series I are much more rare then the Topps cards and the market has yet to place a premium on them but in time I suspect it will.

I am very interested in buying more and just recently bought some raw one's and should have them in the mail soon.

There is a box listed on EBAY that I am considering pulling the trigger on and busting the packs looking for sharp cards. The risk / reward is not very appealing at the current price but I may do it anyway.

I bought this recent lot to inspect the cards and see if the centering is as bad as Series II before I invest a larger amount into more material.

    1985 OPC WWF Series II

I am working on getting the base cards in high grade and have a pretty good start so far.

  • Thanks Dpeck, so you are a series II guy?

If the box you are looking at getting is from a Canadian seller that is who I got my series I box from, PM me if want to.
Checked out nicely and had a few hogan's on the back including #1. I haven't busted any packs yet assuming centering will be rough.

    Any values in the stickers?

I have around 30 sets of the Series II. I was looking for a PSA 10 Randy Savage and Elizabeth and I got the first one ever which was very exciting.

The prices on series 2 really popped around the time randy savage passed away. It seems like prices have come down some as more cards get graded. The centering on these cards is really tough. Dpeck has the only centered Andre the giant that I have ever seen. The bulldogs in psa 9 sold for about 100 bucks when these cards were hot.. I had one in eBay that didn't move for months and think I ended up getting 20 bucks for it. Series 2 also has a few rookies. I think the base cards have some upside and are collectable but most of the in action cards don't have much upside.

I got the lot of 85 OPC Series I today and it was what I kind of expected.

Busting a box of Series I is going to be for the love of the hobby in the short run and not for profit in most cases.

The cards I got were off centered and had wax residue and paying $10 a pack plus grading fees is going to be tough to overcome if not impossible.

The better cards from Series II come from vending and I would definitely be a buyer of some of this if it was made. I have yet to see any so far.

The OPC Series I is really cool because it is much more rare but with such a low number of graded cards out there no one can even start a set.

If this happens and a few people get interested then these could get a lot more expensive but time will tell if that happens.

The piper and both hogans should be pretty collectable IMO. I think piper and randy savage are pretty close in terms of popularity and would think they would be worth about the same. I haven't really seen much of a premium on series 1 vs topps. I also think the 87 OPC Bret hart card has some up side. I have no idea what the production is on the 87 sets but it surely has to be less than 87 topps. I don't think centering is as much of an issue as it is on series 2... So they might not be as condition sensitive which might hold back the premium on graded cards. Dpeck is the expert on these though. This is more of an armature opinion

Picked up a box of 1985 OPC series 2 for $180. Is that a good deal??

It is hard to say. If you keep it sealed I think you are in good shape. If you bust it I think you will lose with the wax and gum stains and lower number of cards per pack compared to Topps.

I opened one box and it has scared me away from busting others from the OPC WWF sets.

From a rarity standpoint it is an excellent buy as there are very few OPC boxes that show up on EBAY vs. their Topps counterpart. Obviously there is not a Topps version of this set but there is for Series I.

The raw cards though really bring very little and have really gotten weaker over the past year. Kruk Cards has been dumping a ton of vending sets on the market and they are not selling well. In many cases less then $15 delivered.

Tuck that baby away is my advice.

Good idea to keep it unopened, there are just too many issues with those cards....I think it is a good buy as long as it is not ripped.
