Let's see some of your favorite sports card pickups from 2013!!!

I don't feel like we get to see enough cards here, considering this IS a sports card forum. I think we get wrapped up in hobby discussions and random ebay drama too often. Let's see some pickups!

I'll start with a couple of random items. I've become increasingly more interested in old baseball postcards. I know postcards aren't nearly as popular as trading cards - but I think the fact that both PSA and SGC are now grading these - will make them more appealing to collectors.

Here are two versions of a similar 1905 Philadelphia Athletics postcard (with and without spectators). This card features a legendary lineup including one of my favorites, Eddie Plank.

    I agree.

I'd really like to see the "Mail Call" thread resurrected and people posting their pickups there. That's such a wonderful thread.

Or maybe we can make a "2013 Mail Call thread."

I think often people post individual mail call threads so they can receive a pat on the back... But it would be nice to have one card pr0n thread where we can just look at pictures... Who wants to read?

Great cards, guys! And please note - this isn't a competition. Just post what you like. I'm just trying to get more scans flying around here. These sort of threads inspire collectors to collect.

Side note - for you pack collectors, posting great unopened pickups is not a violation.

...and all the cards I've picked up, besides my 86 fleer Jordan, have been in 2013. Hadn't boughten a card since the early 90s. You guys got me right back into it!

Here are a couple from the past few days.

First is an addition to the 99 Finest Mystery Refractor set I am sort of working on.

Next is a couple Cubs pickups from a fellow forum member.

My only pick-up for 2013 so far. I had a bunch of December pick-ups so I need to slow down a bit. I was never into caramel cards, mainly T206, T205, CJ's and Goudeys, but I'm starting to appreciate them more.

    Great Wagner card, ToneD.

Here are a few of my favorites from this year.

81 Fleer Dawson - really liked this set when I was a kid. Wanted to pick one up for my HOF set
71 Topps Sutton - picked up from member Justin for my 71 Set
68 Topps Ryan - picked up from member Shane for my HOF set. Always wanted this card
49 Leaf Pesky - been working on this set for a few years. Slowly adding the short prints.

I really dialed WAY back on my collecting last year. I sold just about everything I had ( I kept 8 cards). I really want to just collect again, which brings me back to the set that I just cant seem to get away from. I have built the 86 Fleer Set in PSA holders 4 times already, and have two more going now. I have been buying PSA 9 wax packs up when I can get good deals, after talking to Steve Hart about how hard boxes are getting for him to acquire. With wax seemingly drying up from the 70's, I think its just a matter of time, before 86 Fleer Basketball gets even more difficult to acquire, just from the sheer demand that this set has with collectors.

I have no intention of buying sports cards this year, unless I find something of value on ebay that has been listed wrong and I can turn a profit.

I love this set for some reason. Really tough to get the with grades as most are just labeled authentic.

    That Gehrig is a killer!!!!!!
  • I picked up a couple sets working toward a run from the year I was born, namely Topps Traded sets from 81, 83 and 84. Also another Strawberry 83 Topps Traded in a PSA 9 and this.... Got it on the cheap and well, I just wanted it. The only single I own newer than 1990. It never ceases to amaze me with some of the stuff you guys post! One day perhaps....

Wanted a graded copy until I found out they are oversized slabs.

Love that Worthy. Eventually want to add the MJ from that set to the collection.
  • Ron Santo sure looks a lot like Buster Posey in that photo.

Neat. I don't think I've ever seen one of these posted before. What's the story with them? I am guessing the bottom tab was folded and used to make the image stand up? How were they distributed? I'm not a baseball guy, but oddball stuff always catches my interest for some reason.

Thanks for that... very glad I checked out the article if for no other reason than the authors discussions with Marshall Leaf (I loves me some 1948 Leaf football!).

The last two additions I needed to complete my total run of SF Giants rookie cards (1958-present).

I was putting the Snider off due to price, but the Blanco was simply an ultra-tough card to find.
