I was enjoying my free sub planning to finally join
Looking at this franklin that is supposed to be
FBL
their photo
Firstly I don't see full bell line
and more interestingly
I don't really see the liberty bell crack
but beautiful coin obviously
I guess the crack is there and the full bell lines as well
and demonstrating that grading via photo is fraught with limitations

As far as the bell lines...which may be all there in reality, having effectively become somehow invisible in this photo (as the crack has) there looks to be a diagonal planchet flaw cutting across the key area.
There exist a couple of 1953-S Franklins that would be FBL except for planchet flaws in the same area that cross the lower bell lines. You can make of that what you will.
You can see the 53-S's I'm referring to in this thread.
Lighting and angle can really change how some things with coins look.
I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment
<< <i>Quick question about the FBL designation... are we talking the top set, bottom set, or both sets? I always get PCGS and NGC's specs with this mixed up. >>
From what I understand, PCGS only considers the bottom set.
IMO, the "splotchy" toning on this coin covers a multitude of sins which would have otherwise been readily apparent.
But then, thats only my opinion which has no reflection of what PCGS graded the coin. They did, after all, see it in hand and the 3D effect of in hand examination shows a lot more than these 2D Trueview pictures ever will.
One must be cautious with detrimental remarks on a coins grade based solely upon a 2D color snapshot.

I don't really see the crack of the liberty bell on the photo
my point being
I'm pretty sure the crack is there, but you don't see it in the photo
So you can't judge a coin by its photo in some cases, like this one
