What is your favorite wax/cello/rack pack or box you own and what do you want that you don't have?

We have had many different "what is your favorite" thread but I don't believe we have had a "What is your favorite wax/cello/rack pack or box you own and what do you want that you don't have?". My favorite is a tough choice. Either my 70 cello with Rose on back or my 75 rack with Rose and Bench on back. What I don't own but I want is an 80 Topps wax box.

  • I only collect racks/cello's with Canseco on top and I own almost 20 of them in total but this one is my favorite. I do have wax boxes of 81,83,84,85,86,87,88,89,90 Topps bit just like you Mark, I would eventually like to either own a 1980 Topps wax box (I should of purchased one from Steve when he had them at about $390) followed then by 1984 Donruss.

Cool idea for a thread, Mark! I am an avid coillector of cello, racks, and wax packs from the 1970s. 1973 is one of my favorite years for cellos. Here are a couple of my favorites. The Carlton pack is straight from the Fritsch warehouse and the Munson/Jackson pack is from a collector/dealer who had a full 2nd series 73 cello box for sale about a year ago. I bought about 10 packs from him and this one was the most impressive. I also got one with Palmer on back. The 1974 Schmidt pack is one I self-submitted to PSA from my PC a couple years ago.

The '69 pack is possibly my personal favorite and one of the tougher packs to find--it's a 1st series 10-card "cello" pack with wax pack-like graphics on the wrapper similar to regular 1969 wax packs except these packs have ten cards instead of five. Those of you who remember Larry Solomon might recall this pack among his massive collection which was auctioned off by Mile High about 5-6 years ago.

I am still on the lookout for a nice NM 7 or better 1971 Topps baseball jumbo cello pack..

Just for a little variety (and because no one reads the non-sports board) here are the two Wacky Packages wax packs I'm proudest to own:

1967 Die Cuts Wax Pack (the first Wacky Packages release):

    imageimage

1973 1st Series Wax Pack: I was obsessed with these as soon as I saw them in March, 1973. Very tough pack to find nowadays.

Much like Tim, the pack I'd most like to own that I don't is a '71 Baseball jumbo cello...

I don't have a lot of cellos, but of the ones I do
have, I like this one the best. It has Steve
Garvey uncredited on the top, and the MVP
card of Mantle/Newcombe on the back.

I'm pretty new to this and only collect OPC (Hi Tim! wink wink nudge nudge image) but this one is my favorite so far. It was a gift from a friend.

    image

I'm also pretty happy with an '87 OPC pack with Barry Bonds on the top. I had to crack about half a case to find that one.

The reasonably attainable wax packs for OPC (non-60s) that I'm looking for are '74 and boxes of 1989 and 1990 (why the eff are these so hard to find?).

1986 Fleer Basketball is all I am collecting anymore. I have about 1/3 of PSA graded PSA 9 wax box, with the goal to be 50 or so packs. I was pleased to finally be able to add this pack to the collection.

Mark, There are only 4 out there. One is locked up in a PSA 10 1986 Fleer Set w/wax pack, so realistically there are only 3 out there. I would love to have one, but will probably have to pop my own PSA 10 pack, before I find one for sale.

Of course my favorite is a 76, that was the year I was born and one of the focuses of my collection.

    image

But, another big part of my collecting is that I want an empty box, a complete set and an unopened pack from one year in each decade. I doubt I will ever get a pack from 54 which is the set I'm building (I might have to settle for a wrapper) but I just bought this which is something I've coveted for a long time, so I've decided my 60's year will be 68.

There are some great packs in this thread. I don't have any at all to share, much less a favorite

One of these days I hope to pick up a 1970 Topps Baseball wax pack from the last series (closest one probably to my birthday) and if i happen to hit the lotto I'd like to get a 52 Topps high numbers wax pack as well

    Great packs everyone!!!

I guess if I had to pick a favorite it would be the 71 rak but it really is all things 1971 (most of the GAI packs have been crossed over to PSA).

My white whale is a (legit) 1970 football rak. When I find one it will complete a run of wax, cello and rak packs 1968 thru 1979 for both football and baseball

My favorite pack is a tie, '56 Topps and '33 Sport Kings.
The '33 because it's the oldest, and an iconic set. The '56 because it was the last one I needed for the Topps run before I found this one a few years ago. While penny packs turn up on occasion, the '56 nickel is unbelievably tough, and I think only a few exist at this point.
    imageimage

What I'd like that I don't have? '48, '49, or '53 Bowman pack, or any Goudey or Playball pack.

Always looking for Topps Salesman Samples, pre '51 unopened packs, E90-2, E91a, N690 Kalamazoo Bats, and T204 Square Frame Ramly's

That Sports Kings pack is incredible!!!!! How much does an item like that sell for Griffins?
  • Wow a Sport Kings, this is better then porn :-) Sweet 56! Tough decision, do you cross them over and take a big risk or keep them as is.

I'll try to post a few of my faves. On what I'm wanting, that's hard as sometimes until I see it I didn't know it was out there available. My current list - 86F Jordan on top, 80 OPC Messier on back, 80 Topps Rickey Henderson showing.
  • GriffinsGriffins Posts: 6,076 ✭✭✭
I believe the last Sport King pack sold for about $14-15k in Mile High a few years ago.It would probably be a bit more now, with the '56 pack even more than that, unless there is a big find of either.

No tough decision on crossing them, don't like PSA's holder for both protective and aesthetic reasons.

Griffins you have a very nice collection sir. I wouldn't think there are a lot of 33 sports kings packs out there.
  • cincyredlegscincyredlegs Posts: 2,032 ✭✭✭
John, I love the 71's. That was the year I was born and don't have one yet. 71's wax and cello have to be the toughest of the decade. Thanks for the tip on the 70 cello although they will forever be entombed in plastic image.

Griffens, that is a tough call. I think I would side with the 56 nickel pack.

Great packs everyone keep them coming along with what you are looking for.

This looks like a fun thread to revive. I have a few packs that are very important to me...

Growing up in the 80s, I like my HOFer packs...

My oldest pack, which I picked up from Jim in the PIF thread earlier this year...

And finally, My dad bought a case of 1989 Donruss cello in 1989. I went through it earlier this year because my parents were moving and they told me to come get all the cards out of their house. I found this one and it has tons of sentimental value...

Awesome thread and never seen it before. I would have to go with the following:

Unopened pack run from the 70's - only missing 1971 and 1975 (hint-hint)

1975 rack with 2 HOF's (Bench and Palmer) showing plus the ultra rare Topps mini rack pack from 1975 below it.

Topps baseball display box run from 1968-1976 with the rare 1971 box - duplicates of 1968, 69, 70, and 76 and missing 1972 I believe.

wow is all I can say. Those 76 racks the plastic can get real brittle and yellow. These look pristine

  • Just joining this forum - long time passionate pack collector, ever since 1973 when I started this great journey. That year as a 10 year old, bought a complete BB set, to avoid the frustrations of missing last series from previous years. That was great, until I realized I missed opening the packs. So at year end, bought two rack packs (combo 4th 5th series), for 39 cents each, to open some rainy day. After many near attempts, finally put both away for good - and still have them :) This led to saving some from each year each sport - love this fascinating little niche of collecting sports cards!

Favorite pack is a 1963 BB pack, GAI 9, with Mickey Mantle showing through the back

Would love a great 1957 BB pack (Like everyone else!)

So far, this box is the cornerstone of my collection. Purchased here a couple years ago from a fellow member here. I really want to get this box relabeled "tape intact" as it's definitely there, but am afraid if I unwrap it, the tape may fall off. I don't think BBCE was labeling boxes "tape intact" a few years ago when the box was wrapped, but I'm not totally sure...am happy with it either way because of the scarcity, and the overall condition isn't bad at all.

Always looking for OPC "tape intact" baseball wax boxes, and 1984 OPC baseball PSA 10's for my set. Please PM or email me if you have any available.
