1950s-60s Baseball grades just posted!

Overall very pleased with this submission. I didn't do as well as expected with the 1957-59 baseball as I expected more 8's. However did better than expected on the 1960s baseball, getting many 9's for my set registry. These were really nice cards. I had one crack-out and re-submit that I missed out on. It was formerly a 1959 Fornieles 9PD and came back a 7. Ouch, but always a risk.

Nice sub. Is the '69 Phillies RC really a WL or did they mislabel it like they've done on numerous occasions for my subs? If it's a WL, that makes your sub right there. Good job on the '68 Cardenal as well. That's one of the tougher cards in the set to find in 8 or better. That was the last card I needed to complete my set and I ended up upgrading to a 9 because the 8 I bought was a marginally centered filler.

I can't remember if the 1969 Phillies RC was white letters or not. I'll have to wait until the cards arrive to see if they got it right. Hoping they did!

Where do you find the majority of your cards, (you don't have to give specifics or secrets image but you seem to have pretty large subs with some nicer vintage cards. Is it private deals, card shows, ebay, crack outs, card shops, etc? Thank you and nice job on the sub. Jeff

    Jeff:
When I started collecting in the mid 1980s, I purchased the best condition cards I could afford. I tried to put together baseball sets from the 1950s-1970s in NM or better condition. I guess I was fortunate because much of the industry and interest was centered on the latest modern cards while vintage cards were much more available. I send in a submission every 6-8 weeks from cards I pull from my ungraded sets. I also attend the National Convention every year and the semi-annual Chicago Sun Times Shows. It is amazing how many nice ungraded vintage cards can still be found. I sent in 70-80 cards I bought at last year's National and got quite a few 9s, including four 1959 high numbers. I also have a pretty good knowledge of low pop cards that are commons and look for them at these card shows. A PSA 8 of a card that has a low 9 population sells for a premium on eBay to set registry folks and I have found, graded, and sold many of these to get the money to buy cards I need. Low investment, big reward on those. One caution I would share is that there are more vintage cards available that are trimmed then I have noticed in the past. In case you get the SMR, I wrote an article that was published last summer on my collecting journey. I don't remember the month, had General Custer on the cover.

Nice job Rich, I did the same exact approach you did in the 80's. I have many cards from the 50's and 60's in raw form that I think would grade very well. Doug
