Home PSA Set Registry Forum

Been awhile...what happened to this forum?

Once vibrant ...now seems like a graveyard.

I guess that follows graded cards today.

Cards that sparked bidding wars 7/8 years ago don't sell at all now for 1/2 that.

Brutal!

I wonder how much that Davalillo dude has lost in value with all of those graded sets???

Still have many PSA 8s but I sold all vintage in 9 or 10 for stupid money and invested in
silver.

Loves me some shiny!

Nice to see you back here. There has been a bit of attrition here. A few personality conflicts have erupted and some don't come around anymore. Some banned I imagine and some by choice. The forum does seem to have lost something but all things run their course. I don't know Davalillo but I enjoyed his quest to finish sets in PSA 8. I would guess he is ok. The tough low pops and vintage stars seem to have kept their value.

It has been a while for me. I am still working on my sets and am making steady progress. Done with all Topps baseball sets 1951-69 in PSA 8 or better except for 1952 where I need 25 or so cards. Problem is each car I buy seems to be several thousand at a minimum. In 1948 to 1955 bowman I think indeed 4 49 bowman high numbers in 8 or better and 4 53 bowman black and whites. Basketball I am pretty much done with all mainstream sets thru 72 and don't see myself doing kahns. Most mainstream fb sets are done in 8 or better. I think I need 2 smalls and 6 larges for 52 bowman. For the specialty sets and I Seem to collect them all I have a few I need.nalso trying to finish 34 Goudey, 34 to 36 diamond stars and the 39 and 40 play ball sets. Also have a few hockey and non sports sets I am working on. Only 92 sets working on image

I am one step removed from the process though as dealer extraordinaire Steve Novella does all my buying.it does not seem to me prices have gone down. Maybe 68 and later but I am not focusing there.

Sorry the board is not doing better. Many guys left several years ago to form let's talk sports cards and I assume that is still active but i I do not know. I did go to the National and saw lots of dealers and a few collectors I knew. I also had signed baseballs made with my caricature celebrating my induction into the card collectors hall of fame. Sent them to lots of friends. If you would like one let me know.

Prices for graded cards have been pretty strong of late across the board from what I've been following. I wish I were getting the prices I was getting 7-8 years ago. You must not be following the market that closely.

Silver has dropped about 20% in last couple months...time to start buying again?

  • Good to see you posting Dav. I'm still working on my 51 and 55 Bowman football, but have mostly been building out my modern (SP and SP Authentic) football sets. Most threads have moved to the top forum (forgot the name)image
But i still see most prices on vintage holding strong and moving up slowly. The early enthiusiasm and bidding frenzy for hi grade, low pop cards has eased, but mostly prices have settled into those higher ranges.

  • Ive been building the 1970s sets and having completed almost 2 runs and buying cards from 2007 I can say with confidence that low pop and strong star cards are very robust. 1972 and 1973 have been hot. 1970 and 1971 steady/strong, 1974 dead but then had a strong recent setbreak, 1975 exploding pops but strong prices, 1975 minis (this is my baby and the thread has been active with several loyal and friendly members) 1977 cards just dont come up for auction and are not being graded - chicken and egg..both difficult to find in high grade, but will only begin to be graded when demand is there.
The largest trend I have seen in the 70s is that higher pop 8s can be had for pennies above grading costs so there is no downside now. Low pop 9s are not keeping up with demand, 10s are 10s which means totally volitile prices and future value is entirely dependent on any incremental increase in pop so you are basically playing russian roulette. The most telling trend is that unopened material for the 70s is dissipated like spit in a desert! Much harder to find over the past 5 years.

  • This is my first time back in several years. I haven't collected in quite some time. I actually sold some of my collection to fund my pursuit of photography. Ironically, many of my images now make their way onto the cards I used to collect.

    Anthony,

Are there any cards you sold then that you wish you had back (assuming it wouldn't change you funding your business)?

    All,

I echo what others have said. Prices are selectively strong. There are some cards/sets that aren't doing as well as they were a decade ago during the frenzy (1969 Topps baseball hasn't recovered to its peak, 1971 9s aren't going as crazy as they were 4-5 years ago) but many cards are doing better than they ever had. The $6k for the 1962 Landrum PSA 8 was mind numbing. The hobby is in good health! I think people just started running out of things to talk about regarding their set builds after posting for 5-10 years. In Jim's case, he's almost finished his quest, so much of the work is behind him.

We should make a concerted effort to revive the forum.

Several months ago (if I remember correctly) there was a kind of nasty thread that was started when a collector posted that he had completed several sets. He started a new thread for each set he completed and was ripped by some and defended by others.

I think this had an effect on posting here, as well as the fact that many threads were pulled down by the moderator. The original '75 mini thread going "poof" angered many including myself.

Seems to me there are more than a few petty people on here and I for one don't enjoy the drama.

Please feel free to start some new threads. Perhaps we can get this forum going again!

John, for the most part they were all cards that I could (and did) pick up again- '39 Dimaggio, '49 Ruth, whole bunch of mid grade T206's.
The only thing I had as a kid that I thought I'd never see again and regretted was a 36 card uncut sheet of '49 Bowman. Turns out they aren't that unique after all, and I found one a few years ago.
So no, no regrets. It's just stuff.

Joe, the collector you're referring to is Jim, aka Davillilo. There is always some jealousy on the board, unfortunately.

Nuking that '75 mini thread was a real shame. I didn't participate in that discussion much but I enjoyed reading the information. There was a lot of good stuff posted in that thread over the years. It seems to me they could have removed the few offensive posts and left everything else.

The worst part there is supposedly they agreed to restore the thread sans posts and it never happened. We have a new one, but that was in incredible thread with so much information and so many great stories, it still makes me sick to see it gone.

agreed, zapping that thread was just exhibited very, very poor judgement and a gross lack of experience.

I'm not a big registry collector.

I'm guessing as things change - people move on - new ones come in?

Hey there Jim - glad to hear you're working on your sets - Steve's a good guy - used to talk to him for hours back in the early 90s.

Anthony - I'll sum it up for me - your collection is superb!

I'll be heading to PSA HQ mid March to drop off an order. While I'm there, I'll make another plea to get them to restore it.
