Ever won an eBay auction because of a typo?

Years ago I was the only bidder on "Cal Ripkins" signed baseball and got a signed streak ball for around 20.

Friday night I was thrilled to find this card. I've been hunting for it awhile, and always felt it was over priced, but the other night I came home after a long night at the bar and in a spending mood I decided to look it up.

I only typed in Humberto 1955 and found this:

Humberto "Jackson" Robinson

Was the grade I had been looking for and the price range I wanted. (PSA 5 is currently BIN at 44, haven't seen an auction for a 6 since I started looking). Best part is, it completed my 1955 Braves set!

Any other good finds through a typo?

    Lots.
Off the top of my head:
I picked up a raw 1940 Play Ball Lloyd Waner (would probably grade PSA 4) for $9.99 because the seller called it a 1940 Warner.
A 1982 Kellogg's Don Sutton PSA 9 went for $1 (plus combined shipping) because the seller spelled it Hutton.
A manufacturer certified Phil Niekro auto went for about $4 with shipping because it was spelled Neikro.
I have a 2000 Pacific Paramount PSA 9 Tom Brady rookie being fixed by PSA because they called it a 2003 Fleer Platinum - and the seller repeated that in the auction title. It went for about $12.

I won an ebay auction because of a typo, but in a different way... I made a typo in my snipe amount on gavelsnipe, and let's just say that amount pretty much GUARANTEED I was going to win that card. Donald Trump was not going to outbid me on that card. image

  • I won an auction for "Catchfish" Hunter. I thought it was funny.

I won a lot of 50 Desert S H E I L D (not shield) for about $120. The key thing here is that they were all graded PSA 9. The lot went for half of what the correctly spelled lots were selling for.

yes, I once won an auction for 99 cents (plus $2 shipping), and flipped the card in less than 1 day (before I even received it in mail) for a 10,000+% profit

all because the (non-collector) seller could care less about putting up a picture and didnt want to spend more than 15 seconds writing the auction description... but did use 3 key word to let a good PCL card collector know what he had image and I was the only bidder

Over the years I have won one or two due to typos. But, nothing in the last 3-4 years at least. Maybe more likely now that wildcards are gone from ebay searches, since you'd have to actually guess the incorrect spelling to find something.

sure. every so often a seller will type EX and i just assume that the M, I, N & T keys were stuck.

A few years ago I was in the market for a combination Bobby Thomson/Ralph Branca signed OML ball and all I had to do was spell Thomson's name "Thompson" and I was able to score one for about $25

    What was the card?
I'm building a 1968 and a 1970 Topps set. I have lots of 1970s and 1960s to offer in trade.

Won a load of Farve rookies because it was misspelled on the card itself. Made at least a grand in profit over a two year run.

I won a car about 14 years ago due to a typo. It was a 1984 Nissan 300zx, but the title said 300 zx. It wasn't a steal, so I assume most people were searching for both versions of the title, but I always wondered.

Heh, I've seen the opposite happen as well: a bunch of people notice the typo and drive the price up higher than normal.

Recently I picked up a few books that were personally owned by F. Scott Fitzgerald (all with writing in them, no signatures) because the seller completely left out "F. Scott Fitzgerald" from the title and description and several others from the same seller that were owned by his daughter Frances Fitzgerald.
