Wax Trays or Grocery Racks?

What is the difference between a Grocery Rack and a Wax Tray?

I see BBCE has a 1980 wax tray (seems pretty steep for 3 packs of cards). Did these come in boxes of X-amount of trays?

Grocery racks are 3 packs - each tightly wrapped in cello. Like a REAL tight wrap.

Edit to add: Despite the tight wrap, I have been pleased with the corners on most of the cards out of my 1981 grocery packs. Some cards come out dinged though. Usually the front and back.

There is also gum in the middle so it can affect two cards in the middle. Though the gum hasn't done much damage to the early 80s material I've opened.

Actually, it was a grocery pack, and it did not come from BBCE.

In 1980, Topps produced both wax trays and wax racks which were different from grocery racks in that the rack consisted of three wax packs instead of three cello packs.

Eric, it wasn't a grocery rack, it was a wax rack, which will yield much higher grade cards because the packs aren't
    wrapped so tightly.

I've seen those, too, and know what you mean. These racks were purchased from Justin when he was selling lots of 79 trays and 80 racks a while back and all the racks (and trays) were really nice and in box fresh condition.

To answer your questions, the tray commands a premium as it guarantees 3 unsearched & untampered wax packs and as such can be traded and sold with relative confidence. In addition they are much rarer than wax boxes and that also contributes to the elevated price. Topps packed 24 trays in a short box (like Tim's example in this thread showing the wax racks) with two boxes in a case. 48 trays = 144 packs which is the equivalent of 4 wax boxes.

Thank you very much! This is what I wanted to know. Incidentally, that 80's tray left the building in a hurray.

was 1980 the last year they did trays?

Yes. You will occasionally see 1980-1981 basketball trays, but they are not authentic.
