The biggest individual holders of gold—central banks, international organizations and governments—are believed to account for approximately 16.5 percent of the world's gold, holding about 30,700 tons.
However, this does not mean that the remaining 83.5% is available on the open market. A lot of it is in strong hands and being held tightly.
With the Pope stepping down I was wondering how much gold is own bu the Vatican. I read an article (but I can't find the link again) where the estimated quantity of gold was huge. If I am not mistaken, they where saying that until the 1500-1600 the Vatican owned more than 50% of the gold available.
Doea anyone have more info about this?
