Unopened wax?? Advice?

Looking for advice on buying 1980 and earlier wax to bust and grade. Not looking to just make money at but don't want to buy a bunch of resealed stuff and lose a bunch of money. Vending Boxes? Is anything on Ebay worth buying?

my advice is to really think about what your getting into because 99% of the time you will be losing money buying pre 1980 wax or vending strictly to bust and grade. I know it sounds very tempting and fun to do (and it is), but just remember the odds of pulling that gem mint RC or a gem low-pop star card are extremely, extremely low.

I concur and concur based on experience.

Last week, I broke 2 1979 OPC Baseball Wax Boxes I planned on holding on to. I got a PSA 8 OC Ozzie, a PSA 5 Ozzie and a bunch of nothing. Oh, and spent about $75 to grade the cards. So, yeah, bad idea to break them

treat the cash you spend on ripping like going to the casino. expect to lose it all and see it instead as paying for some fun times and sweet nostalgia. if you happen to get lucky with a hit, awesome - but don't expect it.

If you could consistently make money on ripping unopened from the 70s and 80s, this board would have long ago cleaned out every last BBCE pack. Heck, we almost do as it is.
  • Yeah I've opened alot of modern stuff and graded alot modern stuff. I really enjoy owning rare cards that I have graded myself. Not looking to spend to much or make to much. I love grading stuff especially when Its a tough card with a chance of getting something great. I own alot of 50s and 60s I bought already graded so I kind of have an eye and wouldn't send in anything less than and 8. Im sure submitting 10 cards at a time you would hit some nice 9s and maybe a 10. I understand its risky just looking for something to enjoy. As thats what cards are for. I sent in a 89 donruss Griffey that got a 9 and a 79 Reggie that also got a 9. Love them not very valuable but still tough to get a PSA 9 on those cards. Sent in about 5 1979 topps cards and got the 9.

Sounds to me like you're having fun with this hobby. BBCE has pre 80's unopened wax from time to time. I bought a partial 78 football box from a Ebay seller with a good feedback rating and lots of sales. It was lots of fun opening the packs and I got some good cards. I think their are a handful of good unopened wax sellers on the bay. Obviously don't pay excessive prices. I sometimes use BBCE as a guide to what I should pay for unopened material.
Interested in 60's and 70's psa and raw star and hof cards

Yeah, the key thing is to have fun. Most people on this board put a lot of faith in BBCExchange. I guess
that's the best way to go, but even he gets fooled with all the expert resealers out there.

Best advice is to have fun collecting what you like to collect. Enjoy !

The great thing about ordering from Steve at BBCE is that if you get something from them that has been tampered with they will make it right........if you buy off of Ebay most of the time you will get what you get and if it was resealed they will not make it right.
