1981 Topps Rickey Henderson

This is the most difficult card to pull out of a pack ever. I proved it this past weekend.

While watching about 40 consecutive hours of college basketball, I destroyed all of my sealed 81 Topps, which consisted of 2 wax boxes, 1 cello and 1 vending. Don't ask me why.

After opening all of it, I realized that I didn't pull 1 Henderson. That has to be a record. Brutal. I did manage to pull about 22 Enrique Romo's, so, I've got that going for me, which is nice.

    Goonga goonga la goonga.
  • If you pulled any NM-MT or better Stan Papis, please let me know. It's the last card I need for my Tigers set.

Give me a day and I'll search for it.

It's really a great looking set. Some of my favorite pics are in this one.

Maybe it's an SP. I have pulled 1 out of 2 wax and 2 vending in the last 6 months.

    Thanks,

Turrible. I'm starting to think the $200-250 price on a PSA 10 is well worth it.

The price has started going up on these. They have actually now been selling between 355-500.00 that I've seen.

I always thought this was a hugely slept on card. Bought two PSA 10s a couple years back, one for my collection and one to hold for later sale or trade. Wound up selling the extra one to fund another card for my collection. Tough card of a super popular and amazing player. Gotta think if the pop of 10s holds over time it will rise.
  • You have achieved total enlightenment....early....LOL. Yeah that was pretty brutal.

How were the Reggie's? If I'm not mistaken, that's a pretty tough 10 to get.

Reggie still had no 10's up until about 2 years ago. Then 2 showed up on eBay a week apart.

It's funny because I have opened up a ton of 1981 Topps and noticed the same thing. I have a hell of a time pulling the Henderson. Always been the most elusive card for me. Meanwhile, I'll pull 20 Mike Schmidts, Tim Raines RC's, etc, but that card in particular has always been tough.

I wonder if it really is an SP and Topps just didn't officially announce it

I pulled an OC Henderson in the last group rip. I think I only bought 2 packs. lol
  • I originally would have guessed that the OP's boxes were all mismatched packs and so did not get the correct correlation. But if the card is that difficult to pull, then maybe there is a short print involved. I never opened a box. I have 1 sealed. I may purchase another to rip when I get to the set building.

I agree with you on this. Thinking on the same wavelength I actually won the one that was up yesterday for 355.00. And also due to needing it for the Rickey Basic set. image

Today's PSA population report brain teaser:
1981 Topps Graig Nettles #365. There have been 236 sent in to PSA for grading, more than the Dave Winfield. Steve Garvey, Joe Morgan, or Steve Carlton.

  • Looking at the pop report, for such a modern set, its surprising how few 10's there. I guess centering was a problem in this set as well. At least compared to the 82 set which almost has at least a 10 for every card. And that is given the fact that of the 55,000 submissions from the 82 set, 22,000 are Ripken rookies.

Comparatively speaking, the most submitted card from 1981 is Nolan Ryan with 2,000. Henderson following a second with 1500. Definitely not as popular as other sets as the rookie crop was rather weak, but a solid HOF and star set.

Yankees. What is pop 10 count on him?

    39 PSA 10's for Nettles.

I cant account the others are short printed, therefore was substitute with Nettles. I dont even think Yankees is a good enough answer. I think its an error in the pop report. But I hope there is a more interesting reason than an error.

Definitely an error in the Fleer. Did not know about one in Topps. Odd for that number of subs for that card. The Winfield and Carlton are notoriously off-center. I've been lucky enough to pull a Garvey 10, but nothing higher than a 9 in the others.
