Greysheet vs reality, 1907-S barber quarter

barberkeysbarberkeys Posts: 4,164 ✭✭✭✭✭
Heritage auctioned a 1907-S barber quarter in PCGS-58 today. Nice coin, rare grade. Greysheet says $200-350. It realized $2,200 plus the juice.

    58 frenzy, running amuck.
That's a good date but prolly in the next, next, next, next, next big three.

I don't know what to make of that sure sounds like 10x wholesale or the price a dealer would offer. Then of course that's just my opinion on a coin I haven't seen and if the coin is married to the sheets. Who knows? What about toning etc. even though it seems we pay retail and sell wholesale many coins can bring mutilples of sheet and I just wish I knew how the buyers make out in the end. Perhaps they need that date and the whole in $$$ makes the set they are working on worth more than the parts $$$. Retail is $450 or so and you can throw out the sheets when a coin has something special to it. Right?

I'll take a 63/4 and credit towards another purchase.

As I stated in the other thread, a 64 sold for $1600 last year and two 65's sold for $2760 - one in 8/2012 and the other in early 2011Text

<< <i>58 frenzy running amuck. That's a good date but prolly in the next, next, next, next, next big three >>

I agree with 58 frenzy running amuck whole heartedly.

I do have to say I believe the 07-S is far above the top 15, and more in line with the top 5 scarce coins under or alongside the "Big 3".. I think the 09-O and the 01-S rank at the top of most difficult in XF-AU and into mint state for the most part. I believe the 13-S and 96-S are right below those two followed closely by the 07-S, 01-O and 14-S

I have seen 3 of the 4 coins graded 58, and it is by far the nicest and easily the most original of the 3 I have seen IMO.

The 07-S is under rated but I feel it is under rated even by Barberites .. A truly vastly under rated coin that merits being in the same sentence just below the"Big 3". The 09-O is IMO equal or even more difficult in AU than "The Big 3"

It seems to me the 96-S and 13-S are more available in AU than the 09-O which is on par with the 01-S IMO

If I had to give an order of scarcity (quickly mind you), I would say something close to this:

    1. Extremely scarce to Rare: 09-O / 01-S
    2. Very Scarce to Extremely Scarce: 13-S / 96-S
    3. Very Scarce: 07-S / 01-O / 14-S / 97-S
    4. Scarce:11-S / 05-O / 06-O / 05-S / 08-S / 07-D / 04-O / 93-S etc. ( I am probably leaving a couple out)

Or something very similar.... I am doing this quickly without a lot of thought while working image ... Just a quick opinion based on my own experiences

It took me a bit to find today's example as it's still active and not in the sold archives.

MFH's which sold in 2011 walks all over this as far as surfaces and strike.

Sorry to say but what fetched moon money today imho is a dog...

As it's completely lackluster and has trace PVC on each of the two obverse upper stars and on the reverse U&A in the word Quarter.

In the first half-second or so of seein' that picture, I thought it was stapled inside a white 2x2, and the coin had slipped inside the holder! Crazy optical illusion stuff. Dang, that coin's crooked! image

<< <i>It is a cool mint error, how does grey sheet ever represent mint error pricing, what am I missing here, ridiculous thread, incredibly important info was left out. >>

Realone, I only tossed this error into the thread as SAM5969 mentioned he's seen 3 of 4 the AU58's in PCGS population report. This is the 4th and has never crossed public auction.
It's one of the two plate coins in David Lawrence's Barber quarter book error section. Oh and there is no grey sheet section for mint errors.

Broadstruck... always nice to see you add one of your errors ... you've got some great ones too !
I posted my 1907-S to the Mega Thread - but I thought my coin was heads above the one sold today... IMHO

If you thought the price was high on this 07-S quarter, look at the thread about the AU58+ Indian Cent. A $20 common date indian cent brought over $1000, because of the + designation. At least this 07-S quarter was a tough coin, whether it's 58 or 63.

Broadstruck - What a beautiful, original 07-S. Too bad it's an error, you might sell it otherwise.

    I can't argue with that.
