Business Strike in a proof holder

This was an obvious error. I bid $1400 with the internet bid at $375

Not a coin I needed but bid decent MS money the same. I guess someone else saw it too.

Someone may have got a nice buy if the other was not looking.

This die pair is only used for busniess strikes.

isn't as rare as it should be on seated coins form the late 1860s to the late 1880s. Between poorly made proofs and the increased mintages combined with the cross over usage of the same dies for both, it can be really hard to tell them apart.

Why would you want it if it's a Business Strike? It's been harshly wiped on both sides and would never make it into a problem free BS holder.

It will now that it is already in plastic.

It was common in the 1860's for mint employees to swap out business strikes with proofs.

This is why so many MS coins exist that otherwise should not.

What do you grade this coin to be? It definitely looks ms to me but the marks on the obverse and reverse confuse me as to grade. Thanks for sharing.

The overall look of the coin looks like a business strike strike to me but I'm not the best judge of that especially with the poor Heritage photos.

the coin is 100% not a proof.

It does look to be cleaned.

A MS61 would be worth about where this sold.
