Isn't it annoying when a fellow board member backs out of a small deal by not communicating with you

A fellow board member placed a buy thread for something a few months back. I responded and he said he would paypal gift the money..........under $100.00. Now I know this is a small amount to most of you but being unemployed every little bit helps. I have pm'd him 12 days, 21 days and finally 40 days after the time he said he would paypal the money and have not received anything as far as paypal or messages. I would have been fine if he told me he reconsidered and wanted or needed to void the deal but to do it this way is just ignorant. Thanks for letting me vent.............

That's annoying but a deal isn't really confirmed until it's paid for. Assuming it's someone who you've seen posting on the boards a lack of common courtesy is disappointing.
  • Yeah, a quick "sorry, but I've decided against it" doesn't seem like it should be too much to ask.

Sorry but I completely disagree with this, a deal is a deal once its agreed on by both parties especially when the buyer says "I will paypal the money" Im not sure why you would continue to waste your time pming this guy 21 and then 40 days after the time he said he would pay but after around the 12th day I would have blown the guy up publicly and relisted the item.

I meant from the context of selling an item, obviously on this board there should be a higher standard and anyone who agrees to a deal anywhere should follow through, just saying as a seller I don't count my chickens before they hatch.

I know the feeling--and hate when the other party flakes out. You just gotta accept that there are not only kids on this board, but also immature adults and/or very disorganized persons.

For this board, and eBay, and any else where transactions and trades take place, I've always gone by the following:

#1 Rule--COMMUNICATION is always a must. If you tell someone you are going to do something, you need to stick by your word. If you can't stick by your word, you need to COMMUNICATE and at least let them know.
I collect Vintage Cards, Commemorative Sets, and way too many vintage and modern player collections in Baseball (180 players), Football (175 players), and Basketball (87 players). Also have a Dallas Cowboy team collection.

I realize etiquette and decorum are a few things that get overlooked on these boards, replaced by bluster and posturing. Regardless, when a meeting of the minds has occurred (mutual agreement on price and goods to be exchanged), it is a done deal. Failure to communicate any change or cancellation of the deal with the other party is inexcusable. Whether they continue to post or not is irrelevant. Unless the other party has died or is unable to follow-through for some other unforeseen reason that prohibits them from communicating, there should be no tolerance for such a lack of simple decency and respect.

  • I agree that you need to communicate. Even if he let you know that he has changed his mind you won't be happy but at least it gives you closure.
  • I still do business the old way. Once we agree on the price and agree that the item is sold, the deal is done. I will still pay for something if I agree to purchase even if i can buy it somewhere else cheaper, and I will still sell you something if I find out it is worth more than I priced it at. My word is my bond because "WITHOUT YOUR WORD YOU ARE NOTHING.

Hiya Bob - considering your situation, I'm sorry to hear this.

Maybe you'll hear from him/her after returning from their alien abduction?

Thanks for letting me vent about this. The 40th day was near the end of December when I sent my last pm. I just found the item and was just a little annoyed so I decided to vent a little.
I also do business the old way as the nibbler mentioned. If I agree on something, I follow through.

Also, I will not publically or privately name the person. It is not the way I do things unless I was actually stolen from. I understand that his circumstances may have changed making it necessary for him to back out. All I ask is some common courtesy to let me know.

Did he ever reply to a PM or was the deal set up inside a thread? He may not even know to check his PM's and maybe was waiting on an email or something. Just a thought.
