Guess the grade - 1809 Capped Bustie - grade revealed

I really like this look too! I think this is a O-102. Stupid question, does this have the XXX edge? I can't make it out...

Gonna say AU50 due to the hits on the lower neck...

And I believe only the O.102 (not LDS) is an XXX Edge variety

O-101 is also XXX, but I don't have my book here to ID it.

I think AU also, but I really don't like that neck chatter. Coin is beautiful except for that.

    Weak wing, but that's normal.

    Very nice!

The emission order of the reverse die is O.101, O.110 and O.102. All the O.101's and O.110's have the xxx edge. Some very early die states of the O.102 have been found with the xxx edge. Once the die break forms at the date you can forget the possibility of an xxx edge.

Looks like an o-102a, so it is probably a plain edge I believe.

AU-55 ... perhaps AU-58 because of the eye appeal.

    Nice coin!

Wow, y'all are making me think this should get two gold beans! The hits on the neck are nowhere near as pronounced as in the large image, and the luster screams around the edges. Some nice subtle colors help the appeal too.

Can you believe PCGS gave this only an XF-40 grade? Me neither! I'd like more 40's that look like this please!

Perhaps the perfect opportunity to try out PCGS's new "reconsideration" service? imageimage

Because even with a CAC gold bean, some might assume it's just a 45. IMHO, that's an AU example all day.

Okay...it's tough to grade from pix. But I think that's a lot better than 40.

    Regrade? Reconsideration? Or gold bean?

    Very sweet CBH.

Even with the neck chatter, this one looks to be worth a PCGS 50 grade.

40?! Seriously?! That's just crazy and might well have been an error in labeling at PCGS. Gotta believe it was supposed to be a 50.

Thats incredibly pathetic by PCGS to call that a 40. Like others said, it is an AU.

This is a prime example of how muddy the waters could get with the reconsideration service. There are both a lot of terribly overgraded as well as undergraded coins popping up lately. image

Go for a platinum bean. I think the Pcgs graders confused strike weakness for wear.

I was thinking AU53, then I found your grade update.
    Seriously???????????
    When in doubt, don't.

Especially with 1809 bust halves but also with some others, PCGS appears to grade based upon the wing detail, which is notoriously weak, even in high grade examples. The coin looks to be an au-50 to me.

BTW, the above info came from Sheridan Downey. I showed him this 1809 xxx-edge and he replied "uh-oh".

If there's one, there are likely others. If you have an O.102a (with the die crack at the date) you might want to take a close look at the edge, or send it back to PCGS for a look-see. An xxx-edge is worth 2-3 times as much.

Very nice. I waver between AU50 and AU53, but 53 was my first impression so I'll go with that.

Though I see in the title that you've revealed the grade, I haven't scrolled down to see that yet. So now I'll do that and see how my guess stacked up.

Edit- wow! 40? I guess I can see that with the softness of the eagle's feathers and some of the flatness on the hair, but even so, I'd go 45 at the very least. I guess the color and the eye appeal outpaced the technical grade, to my way of seeing it.

Maybe a little flat in the wings but the stars, etc... and luster should easily kick it above the low XF grade. IMO.
I'll take a dozen or so of 40's that look like that. `

The O-102 examples with only the obverse die cracks COULD well have the XXX edge. If the reverse cracks show as per Overton for the a-DS, forget about the XXX edge.

    Two points:

    1) If mozin says it's an AU...it's an AU.

    2) I have some Downey/BHNC graded XF's from 20 years ago that look like this but now they're AUs. image

That coin is certainly AU. The wing detail on many 1809s is weak. Even when that coin was uncirculated, those wing feathers wouldn't have been there.

Here's my example of the same die marriage, PCGS VF30. It also shows the typical weakness at the left wing.

Saying your example is only 2 grades higher than mine is absurd...

Is there a charge for this service if they dropped the pooch on the correct grade the first time around ?
