Need Help Pricing a 1977 Chicago Bears Team Signed Football; Includes Payton & Papa Bear Halas (

Hi there,

I am looking for any input on a 1977 Chicago Bears Team Signed Football. There are 35 autographs total, which include Walter Payton and Papa Bear Halas. Autos are clean and ball is in good shape. Any ideas of what it might go for in auction? What would it go for with PSA/DNA authentication in auction, and what is the best auction site and/or company in your opinion?

Thanks a ton in advance for any help and opinions!

Clyde

  • Yes, it does appear all the autographs on the brown side were done with the same pen.

which is odd, unless all those guys were present at the time the ball was autographed.
  • I don't see it as odd at all. From the other research I have done, "Teams" signed these kind of balls all at the same for a purpose. Example: I batboyed for the Baltimore Orioles from 1989 through 1998, and it was pretty common for a few baseballs to be set on a table in the lockerroom to be signed for a special event or function. And yes, the same pen was used.
From the other images I have found, this football is very consistent with other 60's and 70's models that were used to be signed by the teams.
This is not an average football from a toy store and autographed one by one.
  • I am looking into sending it to PSA/DNA, but looking for a ball park figure of value....

  • Thanks, but the code looks Greek to me as well. Still not sure how to get good pics on here, and wondering if anyone at all has a ballpark figure of value for The Ball....
  • Is there a price guide for items like this? Any idea what it might go for at auction?

i wish i could give you a price but i cant. what i will offer is the following. halas and payton are the key autos on that ball. other than that the ball doesnt have any additional premium to it. it is not a game used ball and the '77 bears didnt win the SB, NFC or even the division. they did make the playoffs but were blown out by the cowboys (#1 seed and eventual SB champs) in the first round.

since there appears to be at least a different color used on the white panel suggests that it is not a stamped ball. the real key is if the signatures are real. cheapest way to get a good idea would be to list it on ebay and do the spa/dna quick opinion. even with the listing fee it would be cheaper then sending it in to find out its fake. there may also be examples o halas and payton auto's online on the psa website you can use to compare. clearly a spa/dna cert would help your price in an auction.

as for the real question as to what is the price, i would say its some combination of the price of halas and payton signed balls with a little premium added to the fact that there are more sigs. do you know for sure if its signed by the whole '77 team. you should be able to google the roster and find out. a fully signed team would be better than having just half of the team. its really tough to give you a price. for example someone has a Packers auto'd ball from the 62 Championship season. ball has a tape adhesive stain that doesnt cover any sigs. it has 12 HOF signatures on the ball including Lombardi, Starr, H. Jordan and Tom Fears (was a coach for the team). It has a full PSA/DNA letter. BIN price is $2,599.99. Clearly your Bears ball wont fetch that, but this ball has been out there for awhile with no takers. my guess is that you would be lucky to get $1000 for it if it passes PSA/DNA. a ball with 7 HOF bears that is PSA/DNA with Payton but not Halas has a bin of $711.55.

  • Desperation? I have all the time in the World.... I do like to do my research though, and if it is going to go to auction, that takes proper planning....You having a bad day or something?image
  • Cool, thanks for the info. I do know enough about autographs to know this is not a stamped ball. Also, no the Bears didn't win that year, but....image Payton was MVP! And yes, most of the team from the 77 season signed the ball after I did a roster check. Thanks again!

Is Jim Finks anywhere on the ball?
    Nathan Wagner
  • Yes, I believe Finks is on the ball....

Cool Cool! Finks is a tough signature on a ball, that easily adds a few hundred in value my friend (:

  • Darn, got home and double checked....no Finks. I was thinking Tom Hicks, but oh well. A lot of good other players. Thanks!
