Thinking about making my first submission - help/advice needed

within the next month or so I'm thinking about making my first submission. Every single card I own is raw except for maybe a handful, but I no longer want/need some of these raws and if I got them graded, I would be able to make a little change. Basically I'll just be submitting some cards I want to sell or trade.

1. I am not a Collector Club member. I don't think I will submit enough cards in the next year to warrant becoming a member. Maybe someone here can convince me otherwise.

2. How does the declared value work? I'm going to do a bulk submission. But for the cards that I think are worth more than $100, would I have to submit those as "regular" ? Or can I get away with a lie so-to-speak ?

3. Do you guys typically purchase insurance through USPS for your submissions? Not sure I'd be able to sleep at night if I didn't insure my shipment. Also, if you purchase insurance, is there a need to purchase delivery confirmation/tracking or any sort of thing like that?

Thanks in advance for your replies.

  • 1. You get free regular subs with membership 5 with gold and 15 with plat (check the gold) and you get them back fast so it's worth telhe fee right there
    2. Of you are sending high value stuff then undervaluing them cards doesn't do you any good as part of the reason you declare is for insurance during sub and for shipment back to you.
For borderline 100 cards its ok to shy it down. But if you are sending a 56 mantle or something you will need to use regular or appropriate legs service.
  • 1. Agreed. When you consider level of service and turnaround time for the vouchers, it likely makes sense to join the Club, especially if declared value for a card gets close to $500.
    2. Agreed. Let me add that I normally bump my cards down at least 1/2 grade to account for personal bias on owned inventory. Unless you are an exception, I think you'll find yourself a victim of PSA from time to time. You may waste money on EOT (Evidence of Trim) cards and high expectations in general, among other things. I would be realistic, but understand that declared value is really an insurance value for your own comfort.
    3. I always purchase USPS insurance, and unlike answer to #2, I am actually more prone to inflating value on the way to PSA. With that said, I've never had problems sending/receiving packages. Delivery confirmation or tracking is ok, but more than anything else, I like to see my order logged in PSA's system.

If your just talking about a handfull, I dont think a membership is worth it.
You might want to wait for the next piggyback thread on here and see about
doing it that way. Of course, like I said, it just depends on how many cards you
are talking about and how quick you need them.
I dont wanna grow up, Im a Toys-R-Us kid!
  • Prepare to be shocked at how low your cards grade. I haven't got a 10 yet on my raw cards and most of them came from wax or a vending box straight into sleeves.
I did get two 10's out of 11 submitted SGC 98 on a cross over grade.
Lots of 5 - 7 grades on cards that were 50/50 with 4 sharp corners.
    Good Luck!

That's discouraging. Most of my cards look like 7s, and there a few that look like 8s to my untrained eyes. I have a 56 Clemente that I hope gets an EXMT grade or else I overpaid for it. Were you able to figure out why you received 5 and 6s on cards with great centering and sharp corners? Surface scratches that you missed perhaps?

Learning curve, we've all been there, I remember my first sub, sent in all 8's with a 9 or two thrown in, PSA didn't exactly meet me eye to eye, got 1 each 8, a few 7's, and lots of 5's and 6's with a couple 4's thrown in for good luck!image

Actually Collect Non Sport, but am just so full of myself I post all over the place !!!!!!!
  • Mostly surface issues for the lower grades. I did get a couple older cards that I thought were 7's come back as 9's.
I agree with the learning curve - I would not resubmit the 5-7's that I got but they are the nicest looking 5-7's that I've seen - bright, centered, sharp corners and a tiny dent in the card that you can't see unless you angle it just right under the right amount of light. Learning curve!
