Something about the hobby that grinds your gears... I'll start

  • << <i>A few years ago, I walked into a card store and asked the dealer if he had any ungraded 75 T baseball commons. He said yes, but that he would charge me the graded price for the raw cards I wanted, arguing that buyers were going into his shop, buying his raw cards, getting them graded, and selling them at a profit. I asked him why he didn't grade them himself, but he didn't have much of an answer. I briefly looked at his cards, and then turned around and walked out. So in answer to the question, what grinds my gears is sellers asking for the graded card price for ungraded cards. >>

So theoretically, if he felt a card was a 10, he would charge you thousands of a dollars in its raw state. LOL

It grinds my gears that sellers get upset when they hear people making money off of them. Either suck it up or make the money yourself. Its been happening since the beginning of the monetary system. People buy from each other to flip elsewhere.

Lol. Trying to put together a run of 1980-1991 Topps Cello boxes and there were a few I needed on eBay.

I look this morning(auction ends today) and the 1981 box gets bid past what BBCE has it listed for, and the 1985 box gets bid past what it's worth. Of course the bid history is chock full of bidders with multiple bid retractions.

I mean if you are gonna bid $125+ for a 1981 topps cello box, why not just buy from a source where you know it hasn't been messed with?

I'm not sure everyone that buys on BBCE knows of that source. I certainly never knew of it till I arrived here last year.

That might be a plausible explanation if said bidders on such an auction didn't have multiple bid retractions and an inordinately high % of
    bids with that particular seller.

Collecting 1970s Topps baseball wax, rack and cello packs, as well as PCGS graded Half Cents, Large Cents, Two Cent pieces and Three Cent Silver pieces.

Not to mention that said seller has some of the same product listed separately at highly inflated BIN prices

Think that's called a 'protectmyinvestment bid'.
So basically my kid won't be able to go to college, but at least I'll have a set where the three most expensive cards are of a player I despise ~ CDsNuts

It's now officially ridiculous. The bids on the 1985 box are now up to $108 when another seller has one at BIN of $85 + $11 shipping and another seller has one at $99 with free shipping.

I wonder if its shill bids, retarded buyers, or a combination of both.

Fwiw there is an 85 pack with Pete Rose on top in the box, but then there's yet another listing for one of those with a $12 BIN so I don't think that's driving it.

Frankly, I almost hope it's someone who read these threads and was too brain dead to do a search of BIN listings.

The words "warehouse find" in an auction listing make me cringe. Where are these mystery warehouses anyway? Why do they only contain a few boxes of junk wax?

People who call any price higher than what THEY want to pay, "price gouging"...

    RIP Mom- 1932-2012
  • Missing out on a reasonable BIN for a key card I need to complete a set because VCP "notified" me too late...actually I'll bust my other thumb for not being on ebay 24/7 and missing out on that damn card Im thinking of right now... so thanks, this thread has totally screwed up my evening, made me think of negative things, and I am unable to use either hand to "entertain" myself

    Grinds my gears:

    1. "pack fresh" -- yes, I understand the concept...but the product is still 38 years old
    2. "Get it now before the price skyrockets!" -- so am I to understand you have no interest in enjoying the 'skyrocketing' value yourself?
    3. "Low population" in a listing for a '75 Topps Mini Vicente Romo PSA 8
    4. And of course, when I can't find the droids I'm looking for

Oh yeah...who doesn't get irritated by this listing?

"Selling Ex-Husband's Collection" -- usually followed by a short story of how he left with another woman and now she is going to get him where it hurts

I've got to hand it to the first person who used this line. Was probably very effective in selling '88 & '89 Donruss and Topps wax for higher than market value. However, once someone senses a scheme that works, it becomes widespread. Hence, the dirty man with no teeth who will "WORK FOR FOOD" at every corner of every intersection.

  • when people want to buy cards for 30% of ebay prices trying to really undercut sellers.

Guys in sweat pants searching packs at Target, Walmart or anywhere.

    +1

What bothers me most is that this has the biggest impact on kids, and the casual collector. The hobby might get closer to it's heyday if some of those kids and random guys just buying a few packs would hit a big auto or relic, and become more involved. Instead, they just waste a few bucks and probably don't bother buying again. I know I would like to share the experience I had as a kid of buying a few packs from the store with my son, but basically it ends up being a waste of money. So if you don't have a shop near you that you trust doesn't allow people to search loose packs, your stuck buying sealed boxes which is an expensive proposition, especially if it's to give to an 8 year old.
I cannot hit curveball. Straightball I hit it very much. Curveball, bats are afraid.
