Real or Autopen - Lopez & Smoltz

I found these in a box of auto cards - I believe my wife bought my son a blister box of "repackaged" cards by Treat - back around 1993 - the same company - I believe - that repacked cards for a Walmart promotion that culminated in a sweepstakes winning of the PSA 8 Wagner.

I blew up the sigs - autopen? What do you think?

    Hi Mike
I have had a couple of Chipper Jones from that same set and they were real without a doubt. I think those were planted in some packs and probably real.

I'd say they're both real. I believe they came with a certificate of authenticity from Treat back in the day; many players had an autograph deal with them, including Frank Thomas. They were sold retail exclusively with Wal-Mart I believe.

edited to add: Mike, I'm an idiot, I see that you in fact mentioned they were from Treat.

I had two of these from some stuff I bought back in the mid 90's. I took the nicer Smoltz out and had it graded last year. Turned out pretty well.
Sorry for the Camera phone pics, my scanner's not hooked up at the moment.

All of my Smoltz autos that I KNOW are real from in-person meetings look like David Puddy's example. One of the distinguishing factors in my examples and his is that the starting point of the J never touches the vertical line that ends the J. In the OPs example, the line comes back through the starting point- It still looks like a legit signature, just something different than all the others I've seen.

There is a Smoltz up on eBay right now.

    Smoltz Treat Auto

The auto is faded, but has the same unusual ink patterns that the OP's has. Plus, the autos look identical. I wonder if he signed some but sent the rest for auto pen?

Why would Smoltz have an autopen?

Is it well known that he uses one?

    I don't think so - as such.

I was questioning this product - since the blister contained 2 autos and was not very expensive if memory serves.

I tend to be rather incredulous when it comes to companies like Treat and the "mass produced" crap they sold in stores like Walmart.
