Modern BB RC Collectors - Miami PED Scandal about to explode

I heard on Dan Patrick and read in the NY Daily News that the Miami PED scandal involves at least 20 MLB players including at least 2 more top level stars besides AROD. The Miami New Times is supposed to release the additional names on Monday or Tuesday.

DP said that Pujols is NOT one of the names, so that should make a few people on this board relieved.

It looks like any players with Miami ties could be on the list. The one that I fear will be there is Miggy Cabrera. He has deep Miami ties and is a big name.

Interesting. I had not heard this. Thanks for the heads up.

Personally, I will avoid making any judgment calls unless and until I am convinced. These situations can always get cpnvoluted and are not always clear. It is, however, always a shame to hear such stories.

Too bad. I hold few cards newer than 1990 but it's concerning as a baseball fan. I was hoping the game was cleaned up. I guess this will be a constant cat and mouse battle between cheaters and testers going forward.

One of the reasons I don't mind dropping $$ on Canseco cards. What the hell else can he do to tarnish his image?

Despite the additional bad news, I think ARODs cards have already crashed. His 1994 SP Die Cut BGS 9 used to go for $500+, now for $150. There might be a near term dip, but his card will stabilize.

Also MLB is supposely going to suspend the big names 50 games even though they didn't fail a test. This should be interesting to see how it develops.

Who would really be shocked by any of this. A scandal at this point would be if players were proven to be clean...frankly, I'm tired of the entire topic.

It's our fault anyway (the fan). Most of us want to see the 60 home runs, the hard tackles, the seven consecutive Tour de France victories (that just so happened to help raise over $470 MILLION for cancer research). We want to be soooo entertained, but when it's all over and we find out that he had the kind of help that you can't get in a gym, we look down at them and shun them for doing exactly what we wanted them to do. A mere 30 home runs doesn't cut it in today's world. Those guys don't get the huge fan base and huge contracts. So of course some athletes will do whatever it takes to get to that elite level and lie about it. Can you blame them? Sure it sucks that not everyone is on a level playing field, but I blame the testing for that. Test better and we wouldn't have this problem. PEDs has been in the game for much longer than the 1980's.
  • ndleondleo Posts: 4,150 ✭✭✭✭✭
I don't think the fans are to blame for someone wanting to use PEDs. I highly doubt that ARod, Lance Armstrong, Bonds, or anyone else who gets busted tooks PEDS for the fans. They took the PEDs to make a lot of money and become famous, purely selfish reasons.

Greed is why players use PED's.

I tell you what would clear up all the PED's in all sports,
a lifetime ban in that sport if you're caught using them.

What player/athlete in their right mind would even chance using them
if there was a possibility their livelihood could vanish in an instant?

  • As long as they don't fail their drug test, I have no problem with the usage.

The Testing is their to catch them, if they don't get caught it's fine.

I do know I'm probably the only person on the boards with this opinion, but show me a failed drug test. Right or wrong I do not preach these things to anyone. It's like driving, the speed limit is 65, you go 67 is it RIGHT or WRONG? If if it WRONG, they why do you do it. I urge you to go to the local POPO and demand a ticket for everytime you were wrong. It only matters if you failed the test, don't do it around the POPO (or when you get tested).

A side note, don't worry I do not have any kids. If you have daughters you should feel better now.

I don't think you're anywhere near being the only guy with this opinion, and in fact I'll go a step further and say I don't care who did what, or when they did it. As far as I'm concerned Barry Bonds should have been a 1st ballot HOFer, Lance Armstrong has done more for humanity than any randomly selected 200 guys on these boards, and Ray Lewis should be the Raven who first hoists the Lombardi trophy if the Ravens win on Sunday. For the most part I could give a damn about N.American sports, but I do like the Tigers, and I'll be cheering for Cabrera this summer (assuming he's not suspended) no matter what revelations are made this upcoming week. You want to watch clean athletes? Then go check out your local semi-pro softball team. Otherwise, shut up.

Amen... but oddly enough, I play against a few guys in softball who actually juice and are happy to show you. But they're just softball guys. lol

Yes, this is out of control. There's too much grey in all of this. As if the only baseball players that ever cheated played in 1999 or later. It's nonsense. Rickey Henderson never cheated? Cal Ripken? Ty Cobb? Babe Ruth? Cheating can be interpreted so many ways. It's just exhausting and it's killing the game and the interest.

People keep asking why we keep seeing this stuff with baseball and not football or basketball? Well, it's because baseball is the worst run league by far and they are clueless as to how to get the fans back. Baseball is the only one that cares this much and they don't realize they are shooting themsleves in the foot. No one else cares. Baseball CHOOSES to make this stuff an issue

there are a bunch of MLB players who workout in the offseason at University of Miami and all of the ones named so far are part of that group. Im not liking this as a Hurricane fan, but a worry is that the others are a part of who will be named too (true or not). Im not naming any names as its wrong, but google is your friend if you want to research yourself.
  • Jeff has a good point. I used to be the world's biggest hockey fan but when they started blacking out away games (smooth move, NHL), adding the stupid glowing puck and moving teams out of Canada and into hillbillyland they drove away me and a bunch of other trueblues.

Stupid NHL dumped diehards for the NASCAR circuit. How's that working out for you now, Bettman????

Same thing to different extents with MLB. They didn't trust the smart fans so they brought in Vince McMahon and his infotainment division (the incredible hulk, rags to riches, the patriot, the rockstar with the funny goatee - all of the tried and true archetypes) and BAM! 70 HRs, 3000 hits, guys throwing bat shards at each other during the World Series. Good clean family fun.

    They reap what they sowed.

This is an ironic take on the steroid/ped problem. For years the argument was that baseball DIDN'T care enough and turned a blind eye because of the popularity they were enjoying. That Selig and the owners didn't address the obvious steroid use, and that's why we have the current sad state of affairs. There were congressional hearings to determine who was doing what and who knew what. America's Pastime was disgraced by the rampant cheating.

But now that they have the most comprehensive and strict testing in professional sports, it's MLB's fault that the cheating continues? No accountability for the players breaking the rules (and sometimes the law), it's MLB's fault for not pretending there is no cheating still occurring? Seems like a silly argument.

someone needs to analyze Bud Selig's urine.

Selig died 5 years ago. What you see now is just a dummy with a motorized mouth. Their is a ventriqulist in back doing the talking.

Side Note about his death: It has not been confirmed, he just looks deceased.

    RYAN BRAUN.

Not surprised since he was busted a few years ago but got off on a technicality.

EDIT: He went to the U, a previous poster mentioned the U connection and it looks to be true.
