Collecting post 1980 baseball cards, is it worth the speculation..

With taking steriods seeming to be vastly more important than what the player actually accomplished on the field, is it worth it to invest/buy baseball cards going forward. It seems that Football and basketball players are kind of immune from all types of incidents such as homicide, steriods, mary jane, etc. Should we (psa collectors and raw card collectors) just jumped off the baseball cards and move our cash to safer havens (at least for now)? Like to hear your thoughts.

  • You'll be fine if you stay away from the steroid era and after cards. The 80s was really cursed for cards if you think about it. First, there was the massive overproduction of the cards. Then, most of the star players have been implicated for using PEDs. It's a double whammy.

I agree Eric. I'm not saying to just throw your money around recklessly, but your primary motive should be for enjoyment. If you want to "INVEST", I'd stay with major Hall of Famers from 1975 and before and in HIGH GRADE. ($1,000.00+ cards at a minimum)

Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.

  • The OP's question is about collecting as an investment. Maybe that is how he enjoys collecting.

I don't collect for investment purpose, but if I did I would stick to high grade pre-1970 rookie cards.

If we grew up watching sports in the 1980s, that is the era we would be most interested in collecting. If you are selective in what players you buy and stick to product that wasn't available in every corner store, then I think some of the 1980s stuff is a good investment. I even believe that some of it has more investment potential than pre-1980s stuff because it is relatively cheap in comparison and could be more scarce than the older stuff.

There's no answer that's going to satisfy everyone's expectations.

With respect to the OP's query - IMO - there's no wrong answer - just opinions which could get me arrested in some states.

I'm not a big card collector anymore - but the spirit behind my collecting has not changed: I collect for fun and enlightenment.

I truly enjoy sharing what I pick up and writing threads - hopefully - to add a little perspective along the way.
