In "theory" this is what the Baby Head fully detailed appears. They all chase this line drawing ms70 and how much detail the coin gives you compared to this is very important. On some areas, such as the chest and outstretched arm, the legs... Look somewhat flat and worn but that's the way they were engraved. The critical detail areas on the obverse are the upper wreath and front mail. The reverse wheat sheaves are most coveted, early collectors rated their specimens on that feature. The powder horns are in high relief to the reverse and they flatten quickly with circulation wear. ~~~~~~So where am I at with this coin? Baby Head number 7, I am coming up quick on the Octomom! What I really like about this coin is the bold and well detailed bust, coming close to this undefined different appearance only the very finest of the issue have. Best seen in the plated coin in Breens Encyclopedia, a MS coin.....and the line drawings, the Baby look comes out much stronger. Having pretty much a planchet without major flaws it is a solid VF with with some XF details. This coin is the first orientation, exact coin turn and toward the heavy side of the issue at 124.9 grains.
Yup. The old sketch artist indeed got that feature wrong. I compared mine to photos and they are all that way, with two similar "things". Good eye! He probably didn't have a fully detailed piece with that detail.
VERY INTERESTING!!! Off the NGC site comes this image of their highest graded example, a 40, out of six pieces graded. It appears to show the obverse " curly things" more like the line drawing and to my eye very different from my coin. Hmmmmmmmm
