Time for New Puter !! Help !! Please !!

Evening,

My computor just did the dreaded Blue Screen. I have been having problems off and on for about the last two years and have known this day was coming. I'm not going to go into a lot of details but I have at least three different Virus Scans I pay for and I have to run them constantly and do Restores every 3-5 days to keep functioning, but suffice it to say I have recieved my money's worth !! and Some!! I have an 8-9 year old HP PC. The last time this happened to me 10-11 years ago (And this will date me, I started getting Blue Screens on my Gateway, and it went toes up withing weeks!!!) The only things I do with my Computor is E-Mail, and run my E-Bay business, and look for crap on the Internet.

So my question for all of you Computer Nerds is what should I get, I want a lap top (Wow moving into the 20th Century), I want ease of use, I'm an old codger, barely computor literate, but want something to take my E-Bay business to the next level with no headaches!! Something that I can more readily list stuff and conduct my business. I did at least buy a Epson Scanner with WiFi when my old one bit the dust a few months ago, this is an important piece of my E-Bay scenario.

Any ideas?

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks

Neil

Check out the Google Chromebook. I don't know much about it but it uses cloud storage and is relative inexpensive (starts at <$199)

If you purchase a laptop, you'll probably want/need to buy a wireless mouse too.

Just don't ever buy a Dell. After working there, I couldn't recommend that company to anyone for anything.

Just curious why you say this. Dell is all I have ever had (I guess for ~20 years), both PCs and laptops for family members. I don't know nearly as much about computers as some people do ... can you educate me a bit? THANKS!

What you may want to look at is one of the new Windows 8 convertible tablets. WAY better battery life than any traditional laptop (up to 10 hours continuous use in most cases), MS office (excel, word), printing capability, mobile internet options, the list goes on and on. Most of them even have the option of hooking up to a large desktop monitor as well.

The Samsung ATIV series is quite robust - Intel processor, lots of room. Tablets are already eating away at PC space - this is only going to accelerate. Throw in the ability to detach the tablet from the keyboard and when you want to look for crap on the internet, you have a very light yet powerful handheld computer.

    Hope this helps.

Bought 2 refurbished PCs for work last week from TigerDirect.com. Very decent PC with Windows 7 preinstalled. Came with keyboard and mouse. Price of PC - $153.

Also got 2 refurbished 22" monitors for $98 each.

Everything showed up looking brand new. Ran the updates, etc. No problems whatsoever.

I assume you have a wireless router. If not, then that is also an important item.

Your requirements sound basic, so you do not need to overspend on all the extra bells and whistles. So a basic model model will suffice for your needs.

I use to be a Dell person, but their customer service was horrible. I switched to Toshiba and love their computers. I bought a laptop 2 1/5 years ago for my business and bought my a desktop/notebook. The desktop/notebook is only the monitor (the harddrives and disk drives are included), wireless keyboard and wireless mouse. I also spent an extra $200 and made the screen a touch screen like tablets and smartphones.

There are many options and you should get a great computer no matter which route you take.

Added on Edit: My wife likes the new computer because it frees up so much desk space compared to the older desktop models.

Their quality just seems to keep getting cheaper and cheaper. When I first started I actually liked most of the systems that we sold, but then they started outsourcing all their designs and the quality went way down hill in the last 2 years.

    Neil,

I agree with the laptop. You will have the options of adding USB hardware when needed. Some tablets have docking stations for these pieces of equipment but are too expensive. You will love the 2nd screen option with a laptop too.

I have liked Dell for years but have seen the product going down hill stability wise over the past 24 months. Toshiba is nice right now, but try out the laptop first. They have a few different keyboard models and their touchpads are not centered. Which will play a comfort factor for some. Also, look into which laptops can expand on RAM. You can really speed it up cheaply by buying another stick. If you are working on such an old machine I will be willing to bet you will HATE Windows 8. Try and track down a closeout at Best Buy - HHG etc with Windows 7.

Don't forget about a travel case/bag. Extra power cord if you are taking around to shows etc. Wireless Mouse is a must.

Lastly, you have had a computer for 9 years, but the most you can afford right now because knowing you, you won't replace this anytime soon.

PM me if you want to talk in person. My job was buying laptops for thousands of users for years.

I buy from the Dell outlet(refurbished, scratch & dent) and have always been pleased with their product.

If all you're going to do is use the internet, then you don't need a monster laptop. So the question is how big do you want the laptop to be? Will you be talking to a wireless priner/scanner with it?

I don't know and yes I will be talking to a Wireless Scanner/Printer I just bought a Epson XP-400 last year with Wi-Fi.

If you purchase a laptop, you'll probably want/need to buy a wireless mouse too

I purchased a Wireless mouse just a couple months ago because my original wired mouse bit the dust.

Yes I have Wi-Fi at my house, I don't have a Router but Centurylink supplies a black box with a bunch of pretty Green symbols that flash on and off a lot image

    Afternoon,

So I'm going to Grand Junction thsi weekend to look at computors, problem is I don't know what I want!

I know what I need more so,

    1. I need wireless laptop for mobility, bigger the better as I am half blind .
    2. Wireless mouse, I have a cheapo $14 Walmart one, but would I be better served by a top line more expensive one?
    3. I already piad for this year for Trendmicro virus scan and SpeedyPC, I assume those can just be transferred to the new computor?
    4. Whats this somebody said about a Touch screen upgrade, what's that all about?
    5. Whats this about the Google Chrome where you can do everything in the Cloud and they are fairly cheap? Advantages/Disadvantages?
    6. What accessories can I not live without, extra power cord, travel case? Can I just use that stupid bag PSA just sent me for re-upping?
    7. If new computors come with Windows 8, how much am I really going to hate it?
    8. How much should I spend for Excell & Word or does it come free with some computors. I didn't buy them with my current comp and have regreted it since the day!
    9. As I stated, I only need it for basics, E-Bay Listing and syncing with my Epson scanner for scanning and shipping label printing. Sending and recieving E-Mail, and searching the Internet for Po...Err...stuff Date Posted: Feb/01/2013 1:18 PM
