Thoughts on the Two coin "W" Silver Eagle Set?

Anyone think these will be a good purchase? Looks like the Mint has them coming out in May.

Depends on the nature of the coins and the price. It appears that both coins will be struck at West Point, which means only the "W" mintmark will be employed. Since "W" uncirculated (burnished) and proof Silver Eagles appear annually, the only coin potentially unique to the set would be a reverse proof (which might be on its way to becoming an annual offering). So if the set is priced the same as the 2012-S two-coin set, I wouldn't expect it to generate that much excitement.

It's possible that one or both coins in the set could also have unique design elements (such as a reverse modeled after the Walking Liberty Half), but I wouldn't hold my breath. So far, the only semi-major design modification has been the 2007/2008 reworking of the reverse.

Too early to tell - will be interesting how many they make and what the price will be.

The 2012-S San Francisco Sets are becoming more and more popular (after a weak start). Not a lot of inventory around.

At least put a privy mark on them to make them unique like they do in Canada. Too much to ask for I quess.

Not quite "no chance," haven't there been privy marks on the last several years of proof Platinum Eagles?

Seriously, I think there is to many gimmicks already to try to sell more and more coins.

I'll only buy if the packaging warrants the extra fee's! image
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

I believe the uncirc "W" will be a coin unique to the set:

<< <i>The set will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the West Point Mint gaining mint status. The coins will include a reverse proof with the "W" mint mark and an uncirculated version with the "W" mint mark, which will differ from the regular uncirculated version. >>

Isn't that the truth, if it's anything like the 2012-S 2-Coin Silver American Eagle 75th Anniversary Set I wouldn't be surprised. When I first opened it the packaging/case seemed to be worth almost as much as the coins inside. image

Depends on what their definition of "regular uncirculated version" is. If they're referring to the bullion coin, then the "W" mintmark may be the major difference. If instead they're referring to the annual "W" burnished coin, then there may also be a difference in design.

On my wish list is a Silver Eagle with a Walking Liberty Half reverse!

It almost sounds like the 2013-? "regular" uncirculated coin is gonna be an "S" or maybe a "P" or "D"??? image

Maybe it'll be "heavily burnished" or some other unusual finish...what a fun little game the Mint likes to play with our passions and our money. image

added: high relief??? If so, I sure hope it's standard diameter.
  • I would like to see a high relief or incuse version....

but i bet they just "vapor blast" it

Since the Mint doesn't sell the bullion version directly to collectors that would eliminate that possibility.....and coming from the West Point Mint that would eliminate the S and any other MM coins in the set

...a nice privy type mark would be cool.....
