LOUISVILLE, KY. (WDRB) -- A couple accused of stealing more than $100,000 in rare coins from a Clarksville man is now behind bars. Police caught up with the two after several months on the run.

Clarksville Police have been looking for the suspects since November. Police say the couple was pulled over in Lake City, Florida on Sunday.

Darrell Rayborn, the Chief of Detectives for Clarksville Police, explains, "And when they ran their information it was in the NCIC on a warrant from through Clarksville."

The suspects are Daniel Wimmer and Rhonda Smith. In November, police say they stole more than $100,000 in rare coins from a man who was trying to help them.

The victim is named Phil -- he doesn't want to be identified further -- but he has quite a bit to say about Wimmer and Smith. He says he took them in for several weeks, and during that time they wiped out his coin collection.

Phil says he is glad they're finally in jail: "I feel some justification, and I hope that I can put them away. I will press charges fully and put them away as long as I possibly can. I cuss 'em everyday."

Phil says the couple was homeless when he took them in. "I took 'em in off the street until I got an apartment ready for 'em and while I was working on the apartment to get it ready for 'em they were cleaning my house out."

And the couple had been on the loose until Sunday. "I was pleased to say the least," says Phil.

Police had been looking for the couple since last year. "We had some indication that they possibly went to Florida but we had no confirmation of that," says Rayborn.

Now that the two are in custody, Clarksville Police are working to bring them back to Indiana.

Det. Rayborn says, "We'd like to get 'em back here and hear their side of the story as to what is going on and what happened to those coins."

Meanwhile, Phil was able to recover some of his coins.

"I got a number of things that are missing; I mean it's probably 125-thousand now," says Phil.

And he knows most of the ones still missing will never return.

"Some my dad gave me and I had one coin that was one of the thirty pieces of silver that Judas betrayed Christ with. It was documented by NGC...National Grading Corporation."

Clarksville Police are working with the prosecutor's office to have the couple extradited back to Indiana. The couple was caught because Wimmer has a son and an ex-girlfriend living in Florida. She tells WDRB News that she contacted police after he showed up there for the first time in 17 years.

Based on what you could see in the video, what do you think the real value of his collection is/was?

He might have spent $125,000 collecting it.............. image

Huh. Guess that 30 piece of silver was one coin that Phil recovered and videoed for the local broadcast. Amazing how that works out.

Talk about having your trust betrayed. Wow. He took in a couple that was homeless. You'd think their gratitude for such a kind act would make them fiercely loyal.

"I had one coin that was one of the thirty pieces of silver that Judas betrayed Christ with".

I always wondered what happened to those coins.

Also, how does anyone know that the thieves were actually homeless?

I was not aware that PCGS placed ancient coins into slabs. Not even as genuine.

But maybe they did at some point:

The story makes me think that this guy purchased mostly junk from magazines. That's what they showed anyway. Magazine pages showing things like prezzie dollars and elvis tokens.

I am glad they were caught and he got some of his coins back. However, having your coins where people can easily steal them is a recipe for disaster.

Of the guys I know personally who have had this happen its usually a live in girl friend who steals the coins and runs off. Either way one should practice good security with their coins whether locking them up in a safe or bank box.

  • OK, guys. I'm off to Spackle and fix the door trim on your new apartment. Just make yourselves at home. There's plenty of beer, lunch meats and white bread in the fridge. Oh and what did yas think of my really nice coin collection I showed you last night? Sweet, huh???

Should have had the freeloaders help him fix up that apartment.....

Our family used to own a similar type of rental property and, unfortunately, had similar experiences. Some people are just predatory.
