Looks like a worn penny from 1798. A quick guess based on photos I've seen other members post, I'd say G, maybe VG.

    Am I missing something?

That's a nice piece, looks like a large over small fraction variety. Not sure what the Sheldon would be but I would be sure a seasoned copper guy will help you attribute that.

Agreed, it's nice and I like it very much. I'd be thrilled to own a penny from that period.

I'm looking at the "100" in the bottom of the fraction, and wondering if there's double-die strike going on. But I don't see any other marks elsewhere indicating it was struck more than once. But I'm definitely not an expert on this series.

The 0 definately looks like it was repunched. Is there a known 0/o for this yearimage
  • By Indian Head Cent standards this large cent is "worn"but by 1798 Draped Hair Large Cent standards, I think this piece is darn nice!

Here is a photo of a PCGS MS65RB from coinfacts. Looks like a similar repunch on the reverse. Die cracks look different for the obverse.

Well that was definitely helpful. I am convinced then, no re-punch just regular awesomeness image

looks like S-181 an R-3 coin.
As a lowly collector of low grade Early Cooper I really like it!
