1834 quarter types (pictures added)

What was the reasoning between the two different reverses on the 1834 quarters?
i have one with the skinnier eagle on the reverse and saw one with the regular eagle on it today on a dealers website.
Just curious on the reasoning and if one is particularly rarer than the other.

1834 was produced using 2 obv dies & 4 rev. dies.

B-1 used obv 1 / rev F (which has 2 line stripes in the shield)
B-2 used obv 1/ rev G (3 line stripes in shield) This is an R-4
B-3 used obv 2/ rev H ( 3 line stripes)
B-4 used obv 2/ rev I (3 line stripes)
B-5 used obv 2/ rev G (3 line stripes) This is an R-5

The answer to your question is somewhat complicated involving a change in master hubs,
the design change to a smaller diameter coin in 1831, a change in engravers at the mint
and the production of a Presentation Set to be presented to leaders of foreign governments.

It would be easier on both of us if you could read the book. It's very interesting.

The Tompkins book has a great write-up on a new theory for it. To summarize:

Someone other than the chief engraver engraved a new reverse die used in 1833 on the B-2 and 1834 on the B-1. This change was done to incorporate changes that were made on the dime and half dime to prevent die deterioration at the shield stripes. This is why they reduced the lines in the stripes to two. After using the die to mint thousands of coins, they retired the die and no new working dies were made from this master hub.

Very nice coin! That is exactly how I like them and in my favorite grade for bust quarters.

Thanks!! i agree, vf35 can be had often for much less that a nice 40, but usually look just as nice and in this case it has some light colors mixed in!

The Steve Tompkins book on Early US Quarters is highly recommended, well worth the money for anyone with even the littlest interest in the Early Quarters. Spend the money on this book, and buy the quarters later.
