PART 2! Well I have seen it all now. ICG vs PCGS...WOW!!!

Wabbit2313Wabbit2313 Posts: 7,268 ✭✭✭✭✭
OK, so we have seen the PCGS Rattler cracked out and downgraded from a 64 to a 63 by ICG.

Which coin is better, the new ICG 63 1881-S, or the 1881-S posted right below it, also sent to ICG on a prior submission during my "self education" quest. (Yes, I know, many think I am wasting my money, but it is mine to waste so stop!)

Coinbuyer called severe damage on the 63, I wonder what kind of wisdom, (confusion) he will have on this!

1881-S from the prior ICG submission. (Grade withheld for now.)

The 2nd ICG 63 has many more facial hits keeping it back. It also has a slight rim bump near 12:00

I like the former rattler 64 better as a slight wipe is less noticeable to me than a buch of cheek chatter. A grader just might miss the field wipe. They will never miss cheek hits.

I have not revealed the grade yet, so please don't automatically assume it is a 63!

IMHO, 63 is a fair grade on the ICG-graded coin.

Although there aren't any major abrasions to the cheek, there are some well-distributed bag marks on both the neck and fields, along with the luster being subdued (probably the result of a not-so-good dip).

With this said, I'd chose coin #2, even if it has a bit more chatter on the upper cheek. I just can't stand the washed-out luster on coin #1.

But again, just my honest opinion. image

I like the top one better (that shows the holder). The jaw scar and scrape/discoloration on the right field of the bottom one are too distracting.
I never thought that growing old would happen so fast.

I'd prefer to buy it in a 63 holder but would pay generic 64 money if in a PCGS/NGC holder. When it comes to common date dollars few dealers are too fussy about the quality.
If it's in the holder, it sells.

The second one would be fairly graded at MS63, but is that PVC residue I see on the right side of the field?

    Wabbit,
I am not convinced that this is a useful means to 'self education'. If you want to learn to spot fine grading differences involving uncirculated coins, the only effective way to do this is to look at a bunch (20-30) of them in hand, at one sitting, all slabbed with grades in a narrow spread (say, 62-64). This can be most easily done with generics (Morgans, Saints, Peace dollars, late date Walkers, and some other series). Looking at a couple at a time isn't particularly helpful, in part because there are multiple ways to arrive at particular grades of uncirculated coins (60-65 range).

Sometimes, stuff just doesn't make sense.
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

    The name is LEE!
