Will Cracking these out decrease the value?

I have a complete 1959 set, and it is all raw except these 6 cards. I would like to have the whole set raw, but i do not want to crack these out if it will decrease the value. Let me know what you think. Value wise will they stay the same or go down outside of the PSA holders?

The Whitey Ford card is the only one I would leave in the holder, other than that, crack away!

I would not crack the Ford or Mantle. I got more for my Cash raw than I would have if I left it in the 6 holder. But a graded Mantle is always desirable and A Ford 7 will get you a good price. You could always buy a lesser grade raw Ford to replace it.

What I do with my sets is take a color photocopy of the graded cards and trim the copy to fit in the binder sheet pockets. Then you have a complete set so to speak in the binder - just take the highest quality copy you can.

    Looks like this:

Thats a great idea with the scanning of cards to put in the binder. I think im going to do what JMDVM said. Im going to leave the Mantle graded, along with the graded Gibson i have but i didnt picture. Im going to purchase a nice raw Ford for my set and sell the PSA 7 since i dont need that high of a grade for my set. The rest will be cracked out though!!! Thanks for the input everybody.

BTW, the Ford is for sale if anybody wants it. Just let me know.

  • It depends, do you collect labels and price quotes or cards?

If the answer is cards, I would crack everyone of those.

I disagree. Keeping the important cards graded would help afford some sort of protection. Pulling cards in and out of binders can ding the corners up. Unless the card is a real beater, I would get the 'key' cards slabbed.

Guess it depends on your personal taste. For my '55T set, a large majority of the stars are slabbed (ie Clemente, Koufax, Snider, etc), while the rest are raw in ridged card savers, and tucked in a two row shoe box secured with 20-year old newspaper.

I keep the stars slabbed mostly for their protection. While I have zero intention ever selling the set.... Hypothetically if I did, safe to assume the slabbed stars would give the prospective buyer more overall confidence, which typically leads to a higher price.

I'd post a picture of it but my photobucket account is on the fritz.

You can always buy a raw Ford for around $10 and sell the PSA 7 for maybe $50.

It's 20 years old because that's when I started the set and guess have been too cheap to replace them with new newspapers.

Edited to see if these pics work:

edited again to add: Topps skipped a few numbers and those have been identified with flimsy card savers and a note saying '#188 does not exist'

Glad I could help. One other point about keeping the Mantle in the holder: A potential buyer down the road won't have to wonder if its trimmed or altered. Its the most valuable card in the set.

never bad to crack any common (Topps) card below a 7 (common as in Not Rare)
clean good looking midgrade raw cards often sell for more $$ than slabbed cards... collectors see 7s and 8s when in reality (and viewed through conservative 3rd party grading hype) they are less....
because of this, there are a few dealers on eBay who crack all the time and resell as raw ....and I dont blame them one bit
