One grading event doesn't mean it got the right grade. Submit if 3-4X in order to do that.
If the coin were raw most around here would not want to pay more than MS63 money for it. So why should a holder jump it to 65?
If submitted for bulk grading with a min 64 grade or even 65 grade, much better chance it comes back in that grade. Submitting coins one or two at a time in isolation improves the odds of not getting the correct grade.
I think the OP should send it to every grading company so we can get all of the opinions. Send to ANACS next, then NGC, and finally back in a PCGS holder. Post your results in this thread as you get them. Now that would be a fun experiment!

Coin World already did that several years ago and if memory serves me correctly ACG(much to our collective disbelief and consternation) proved to be the closest and most consistent of the 10 or so TPG's involved. do we really want to repeat that???

I remembered seeing this thread the other day so wanted to post my latest ICG vs. PCGS story. I bought this 1896-o on Teletrade in an ICG AU50 holder (link below). I cracked it out and sent it to PCGS with a large grading order. I just got the grade back from PCGS today on this coin. AU55
I collect mostly Morgan varieties, low ball Morgans and quarters so I wasn't looking to buy a 96-o. When I was flipping though the coins on teletrade that day I remember thinking, man that is a damn nice looking AU50 and only 60 bucks bid? I'll take it..

Don't you mean that there is a much better chance that it comes back with the incorrect grade?
I enjoy whiskey. I don't get any money back after I drink some. At least he's got a coin still. >>

edited to add: Lots of talk about which slabs are the toughest (SEGS it seems). Anyone care to share cracking tips? >>
I place the slab in a cotton sock, place it in a vice on its edges, then gently tighten the vice until I hear the "CRACK" - never damaged a coin, the sock catches the plastic pieces, and the coin doesnt tumble onto a hard surface when it is freed!!!!

<< <i>This is one of the strangest threads I've followed in a while.
First, why would a person crack a coin from PCGS, send it to ICG, and then post the results on the PCGS forum? What's the point? If it upgraded, downgraded, or was bodybagged what would be learn? Not much.

Because he wanted to. Because he can afford to. Because for some people blowing $100 is like buying a Big Mac.
I, for one, appreciated the experiment. And the poster who pointed out "neck damage" with the red circles needs to look at a few more Morgans.

I don't think ACG was "closest" since it's an opinion and there is no absolute "truth" to which grade was "right." ACG was, however, absolutely the most consistent of the TPG's in assessing grades.

Don't ignore ANACS, ICG, PCI, SEGS. There is some hidden treasure among the "trash heap". And it can be fun looking for it..
Be careful messing with those SEGS holders - those critters are sealed tight.

Gosh, I'm trying to think of ANY coin that's NOT a true statement about
So why should a holder jump it to 65?

wrong again, Baley, the rant would be that "there's a reason it isn't in a holder" as if every raw coin has already had an examination.

<< <i>I definitely see it as a 64, not a 65. Nice coin, but not 65 quality, especially for the date. You should have left it alone. >>
A curious "experiment" in any event.

Good idea - never thought of the sock!
