Guys - if you were looking at buying a $3800 box, would the following description give you pause? It does for me - even though the seller is beyond repute. Is there anyway to really tell for sure whether the shrinkwrap has been tampered with?

1972/73 Topps Basketball Unopened Wax Box From Sealed Case. We cracked open a sealed case of 1972/73 Topps basketball today (September 13th, 2013). We have these fresh untouched boxes available that will be shipped shrinkwrapped and marked "from sealed case"! UPDATE: We had sold this whole case back in September only a few weeks after we cracked it for boxes. Someone today (Jan 10th,2013) sold back to me a few boxes that they bought from us. These boxes are still wrapped in our shrinkwrap and are perfect in every way!

  • It sounds like they were sealed before the case was sold. And it sounds like they received the boxes back with the seal still in tact. I would ask if they came back with the original date and label when they originally cracked the case so you know that they were not opened or searched in any way.
  • I would believe Steve (BBCE) over anybody in the business. No worries if you decide to buy from him.

Believe me - I put a lot of dollars into that trust. To even put it in the description when he really didn't have to is totally forthright. Whoever sold back the boxes is another issue entirely.

First off I would trust that Steve knows his shrink wrap and the box is 100% good but based in my dealings with Steve I am sure if you asked Steve to open the shrink wrap that he placed on the box originally, inspect the packs again, just to make sure, and then shrink wrap the box again for you that he would. It would not hurt to ask if you feel uneasy that someone else could have gone through the box and then resealed it.

My only concern would be if the buyer of the case cracked a few boxes opened and found them to be from a poor quality factory run. If you are buying it to hold as a sealed unopened collectible, that would be less of a concern but if you're buying it with the intent to open it at some point, that would be a bigger concern.

Gemint - thanks I never thought of that. And, yes, I was planning to rip that box so fast it would make your head spin! Kudos to Steve for even mentioning it when, really, he didn't have to.
