Large Cent from my 'Transition Years' Collection - Guess the Grade GRADE POSTED

Walkerguy21DWalkerguy21D Posts: 11,672 ✭✭✭✭✭
I've been fascinated for a long time by the large cents (and other coins) of the time period 1835-1843, that showed a lot of transition from the old designs of engraver Robert Scot, to William Kneass, and finally Christian Gobrecht.
This example was acquired from Mary Sauvaghn (sp), who was working for Gary Adkins at the time - so it's been in my possession for a while, but just recently had it photographed:

Here is the original pic of the rev:

And the grade......I may actually be motivated enough to send this one to that sticker company for their opinion:

Don't know anything about the series, but like that design, and a nice coin.

    I'd venture a guess of 66 RB.

MS-64 Brown? Copper is SO hard to grade using images. Balancing the luster and color of a nice large
cent is an art. The correct spelling is Mary Sauvain, by the way.

Here's the white balance adjusted on your reverse shot image

You are quite right about that, that's why I had it done professionally, because I could never come close.

Thanks Broadstruck - but the reverse really has a little more green and less red. I'll try and play with the original images from the cd a bit more.

Oooh, that's cool! I just picked up an 1839 obverse of 1840 cent, and like you, I think there may be a theme coming down the pipe soon. Transitional years are uber-cool image

Nice piece. Do you have a matching example of the 1843 with larger reverse letters?

I have the 1843, Mature Head, Large Letters reverse, purchased from CVM a while back.
It slabbed a lowly MS62 at our host, and I didn't deem it photo-worthy at this time image

I was going to say 64BN. Really, I was!

    Nice one.

Thanks all - Since I had it at FUN to get photographed, I also showed it to some of the dealers, first stipulating it was NFS.
They all said it looked undergraded in that holder. So perhaps it may attain gold bean status someday.

Definately try for a gold bean rather than a regrade. I think it has a good shot. Plus you know it's stable since it's been in that Rattler for forever.
