First large cent I bought in a long while....

Yesterday, I picked up this nice 1919 N9 cent on eBay. While it's a common Randall hoard variety, and numerous Unc. specimens are available, those aren't necessarily any better looking than this lightly circulated example in terms of eye appeal. This coin is a pretty good match to my 1821, which was in a PCGS AU55 holder at one time and is now NGC AU55 for some unknown reason (not my doing). I hope this one doesn't have any surface problems that would keep it from grading, or back it goes.
It makes sense to certify high grade, common variety large cents because the market for these is mostly Type collectors. I highly doubt an EAC guy is going to flip out over an R1 variety in commercial AU 50-something. However, someone looking for a Matron Head in a PCGS problem-free holder is usually thrilled to locate for a coin like this, which is choice and free of distracting marks and spots. Thus, I usually slab them in case resale is necessary at some point.

Now let's see that 1821 that matches it!

This is from the Heritage archives. I can't get a good photo now that it's encased in the white stuff.
Thanks for sharing.
Too many positive BST transactions with too many members to list.
<< <i>One thing I should add is that this variety is characterized by a near total lack of dentils in its later states. Newcomb wrote, "Rev. G State b. ...... There is no beading to border milling on obverse and reverse dies when this reverse in state b. is used." >>
I new something looked different. One of the reasons I have always liked large cents, no two look exactly alike.
Nice color and surfaces, I like it.
Successful BST deals with mustangt and jesbroken. Now EVERYTHING is for sale.
