Did anyone notice this about Dmitri Young's impressive GEM MINT 10 collection?

I was thinking about Dimitri Young's auction from a couple of months ago and was wondering this. Did anyone notice that one player in particular seemed to be missing from his collection? Mickey Mantle. Did Dimitri not have any Mantle's in his collection or did he decide to not part with them yet?

Spence probably has all the known PSA 10's.

I don't recall seeing a high grade Williams or DiMaggio either. I guess even with deep pockets, he could just never acquire these cards.

i vaguely recall reading somewhere that he didn't sell "everything", so perhaps he kept a few faves.
  • As of April 2012, he did not have a Mantle rookie, but he wanted one.

"Young admits he'll still scour eBay and stay connected enough to know if the only Mickey Mantle rookie PSA 10 goes on the market."

ah. thanks for the reminder, i guess he did wipe out his PSA 10 hoard in favor of '81 Topps and the search for Fernando.

may a 10 ever exist. hope he finds it.

When I list my 1951 Bowman and 1952 Topps PSA 10 Mantle's, it will definitely be on eBay! image

    I love this quote:

"So when Horton's PSA 9 card popped up on eBay for $400, buying it was a no-brainer. Young sent it to PSA three times, asking that they bump it up to a 10. The third time they did."

Here's a missing quote from the article:

"So when Kaline's PSA 8oc card popped up on eBay for $400, buying it was a no-brainer. Young sent it to PSA three times, asking that they bump it up to a 10. The third time they did."

  • Don Spence has the only 1951 Bowman Mantle PSA 10. The three 1952 Topps Mantle PSA 10's have not been on the market in over a decade.

From a 2001 article, the history of the three 1952 Topps Mantle PSA 10's:

Fogel-Murphy Specimen. The card came from the fabulous 1952 Topps collection of Mark Murphy. It was then sold by dealer Bill Hughes to Collectors Universe CEO David Hall for $50,000 in 1993. When Hall's collection was auctioned by Superior in 1996, renowned collector Marshall Fogel purchased the card for $121,000.

Wormser-Candiotti Specimen. This specimen was from Ed Wormser's wonderful collection. Sold in the Wormser sale by Robert Edward Auctions in 1996. Resold by Superior in 1998 to former major league pitcher, Tom Candiotti, for $104,500.

Roehrig-Garcia Specimen. First sent in to PSA for grading by dealer Craig Roehrig. Sold to Peter Garcia in 1999 for $160,000. Resold by Superior to an anonymous collector in June, 2001 for $275,000.

Maurice- didn't Candiotti sell off his collection thru Louis Bollman years ago, or am I thinking of someone else?

  • Griffins, I believe Candiotti sold a significant portion of his collection to Ken Kendrick but I don't know if it included the 1952 Topps Mantle PSA 10.
  • Quote from Dmitri Young: "I don't care about the 1952 Topps -- that's not a true rookie (Mantle) card."

I'd heard that too, but thought Bollman brokered it. Might be wrong, thought there was some litigation mixed in there as well.
