<< <i>There is no priority option with registered mail. It may seem like it at times, but there is no speed option with registered. >>

Either my post office is lying to me, or you are wrong. In fact, I have a post office receipt right in front of me that shows the priority mail option was chosen for my registered mail package.

    >>

I should have said no priority option that will assure faster service. Of course one can use either first class or priority, but as you said earlier it usually makes no sense to pay extra for priority service when first class is available.

I guess my experiences are just different than others here. My shipping times for Priority have been excellent, 24 hours from my place in NorCal to PCGS, 2-3 days from NorCal to East coast. I'm sorry registered mail sucks for you guys.

Registered works great for me, no complaints here.

<< <i>I did a standard overnight shipment with FedEx the other day and was impressed with how far ahead they are than USPS in terms of tracking, free slim express boxes, etc., that has some business friendly advantages. >>

The USPS will deliver a registered mail package insured for $25,000 for a cost of $53.85. Making the same shipment by FedEX overnight with third party insurance for the same $25,000 costs over $100. Is better tracking worth paying double for the shipment? It's not to me, but as always, YMMV.

<< <i>Having to prove value is a crock of sh_t!!! They should owe you whatever premium you paid!!!!

If you wrap a dog turd in paper and put it in a box and send it registered insured for $2000 and they lose it or steal it.......

THEY OWE YOU $2000......PERIOD!!!!!!!! WHAT A CROCK OF SH_T!!!!!!!!

Rant over. Hope your package gets there. >>

Agree. You could have sent a rock. Once the package is lost or stolen, how can anyone prove the value of the contents of a box that no longer exists. >>

What happens if the package is later found and the contents revealed? If it is determined that you lied about the contents and/or their value, they could be after your ass for fraud. It is exactly for this type of situation, that they expect you to be able to prove/verify value. If you can't substantiate value, you'd best just take your chances or select a service like registered to minimize the chance of loss. >>

What if someone found the package and stole the coins and put a rock in the package?
Edited to add that I'm be facetious here.

If there is evidence that the package was tampered with of course it is one word against the other. Also how would a random person know what was supposed to be in it originally? If the package is found intact and it is determined that one was less than honest about value/contents then one mite have some splainin to do.

Don't they have to open it first to determine there was fraud involved? Do they open it with a video camera and witnesses?

Are we talking about a package where a lost claim has been filed, but not not necessarily paid? IIRC you don't have to declare what the contents were [if they weren't hazardous, poisonous, etc.] at the time of mailing. You do have to declare contents and value when filing a claim.

If you file a claim for loss, the claim is paid and the package subsequently recovered with evidence of tampering, it will be hard for the USPS to find any wrongdoing on your part. If a package is recovered intact and the contents found to be different from what was stated on your claim form, they will ask some questions.
