This Is How You Pay Alimony

I was searching through the 1944 Numismatic Scrapbook Magazine for an unrelated project.
There was a story about a guy who had to pay ten dollars a week alimony, so one week he took a thousand Lincolns, mixed them into a big jar of molasses, and delivered the whole mess to the ex. It was 1944, so presumably there were a lot of high grade steelies in there. I'm not sure how acidic molasses is, but that doesn't seem like a good combination.
Anyway, the Court admitted it was very funny what the guy did, but also made the guy pay up in "regular" money.

<< <i>But, just maybe, there was a 1943 copper or 1944 steel cent in there! >>
In 1944, I bet there were a few Indian cents in that mix and perhaps a 14-D, 1922 plain, or some other sem-key dates..

<< <i>Was molasses rationed during the war? >>
I believe it was not, since there wasn't a lot of demand for it in the first place. Sugar was though, and there was a hearty trade in ration stamps for it.
is required to accept in payment. Some small number, maybe 50.

<< <i>Hmmmm...I pay 1700/month in alimony. In pennies, that would be difficult. >>

Can you pay in $1 bills or coins?
Still, just pay the money and go on with life. Doesn't it change if she gets married again?
Well, just Love coins, period.
<< <i>I think I have some of those wheaties, dark and sticky. Will PCGS designate them as being from the "1944 Molasses Incident" on the slab? >>
Yes, after "restoration ". They first must boil them in water until a bland metallic flavor is achieved. If the taste like sour grapes then they'll be "genuine".

Legally, there is no limit under federal law, according to the currency act of 1965.

<< <i>Divorce in Texas was magical. My ex to be wanted half the collection, I requested half her horse. She changed her mind quick. Also, Texas doesnt do the alimony thing if the other one is employed and makes a decent wage .
which half of the horse?

But you are also common-law married in a relatively short period of time. BTW I would have requested the front half of the horse and left her the droppings end.
That's a terrible story. Apparently, "this guy", did not think it was important to fulfill his legal obligations, and he preferred to harass his former wife. He is lucky that the court did not find him in contempt. Not a surprise that such an unethical individual would end up with a divorce.
