The Mint has no say, your petition should be to Congress.

The mint does what the are told and not by what people want.
It's that old public law thing.

Yes....but the general public does not understand this. If my petition was to gain attention of the media (many do), then Congress may decide to do this.

Nice. Why don't you frame a 8x10 of it, and sit it on your desk?

Maybe you should have thought of this back when you were doing "Occupy Galesburg" back in 2011. Hmmm, five whole people showed up...

Yes it would be something to congress - but doesn't the mint have the power to create a medal?

I thought so but maybe I am wrong...

Timmy, I really think you need to find a cause and stick with it:

Yes. I really hate seeing food wasted. Eat a Yoplait yogurt, then cut the cup in half, and see just how much is left. Now multiply that by the hundreds of thousands of yogurts that get consumed, and then you will see it's a big waste.

<< <i>Yoplait Yougurt's container makes it hard to consume all the yougurt. There are several crevices in the container which yogurt remains in and is hard to get out. I feel that this wastes food. Other companies yogurt containers are a much more simple design, and allow you to consumer all the yogurt. >>

Let's see, cannot spell yogurt and "allow you to CONSUMER all the yogurt - what? Are you going Ralph Nader on us boy?

    1. Congress.

    2. 50 years from death is 2018. They'l likely do one then.

    3. A silver one will be a massive sell out, and a for sure hot thing.

    4. They may even go for a gold-silver-clad set.

Martin Luther King Jr was one of the ten greatest men in history. Unfortunately his memory has
been so perverted in recent times that a tribute might be inappropriate and draw unwanted attention
to things done in his name. It might be better to wait and give him a more appropriate honor. Perhaps
something to commemorate the millions who didn't die accomplishing things that needed to be done.

Yup. He's the only American honored by a federal holiday. That said, I have no problem putting him on a commemorative coin. Perhaps Obama could issue an executive order to make this happen.

Presidents day honors Washington and Lincoln, both Americans.

And one more time for the uninformed, the Mint only produces coins as determined by either Congress or the Secretary of the Treasury, depending upon which coins we are referring to. Thus coin design as well as what to produce is out of the hands of the Mint.

Presidents day honors all presidents. Washington and Lincoln used to be honored with their own separate holidays.

If you really want to ask the government to do something, then this is probably a better place to create a petition:

Do some research regarding presidents day. It is still officially known as Washington's birthday in the code that set it as law. In 1971 Nixon signed the current law. It was never about all the presidents, but more about merging Lincoln's birthday as that was a holiday in a number of states at the time.

    I'll pass.
There will probably be a medal or coin in 2018 on the 50th anniversary of his death.

The Ike dollar, Kennedy half were both first minted the year after their death. I'm not aware of any such law that says that a subject has to be dead 50 years for commemoration.

That said, I've long felt that Dr. King should be commemorated. The King memorial foundation would probably be the benefactor. Start a letter campaign to gain support, and write your Congressman.

    HAPPY COLLECTING!!!

I'm for it, too, but my mind works in mathematical ways and so I'd prefer to see it on a major anniversary, 2029 is fine with me.

You're really going to go far with wonderful spelling:

<< <i> To: US Mint. Mint a Commemorative coin honoring Martian Luther King Jr. Sincerely, [Your name] >>

Martian, seriously? One does wonder if there are double entendres intended in that spelling.

I'd like sporks banned. They're useless as both forks and spoons. Is this where I start?

I have no interest. I think his movement was hijacked by those who had another agenda, not one of racial harmony and respect based on merit. That horse got put back in the barn a long time ago. A coin would just remind me of that each time I saw it. I am sure it will come one day though. I am surprised they have not made numerous examples already.

Sporks rock. Do you hate flexi-straws too?

I love flexi-straws, as they extend the functionality of a straw without compromising it. Sporks, however, are very flawed. You can't get that last bit of spoonable food out of a dish, because the end of the spork has no scooping or scraping capability. The tines of a spork are too short to hold anything securely. They are the New Coke of picnicware -- simultaneously neither fork nor spoon enough to meet the essential requirements of being either, resulting in an inferior compromise to anyone who just wants one or the other.

No, what did MLK produce? Empty words it seems, as recent polls show racial tensions
higher now than in his day. Shame on us.

Yes, this is where you start. Once sporks are banned, they should become quite valuable.
Best is to keep them in the original wrapper. Sealed boxes will be in greatest demand.

They have plastic sporks in schools but no plastic knives. All of this plastic should be recycled into plastic money.
  • messydeskmessydesk Posts: 20,299 ✭✭✭✭✭
Plane down one of the edges of a spork handle and you can have your knife. Call it a "spork+". Package it with bandages.

America already provides a 3 day love-fest for him every year. I'll pass on the petition but the 2018 50th anniv. coin sounds like a good idea.
