RIP King George V, Euthanized Jan 20, 1936

Link

The initial reports were that his final words were, "How is the Empire?" But his physician noted that before the fatal dose, he was given a shot to help him sleep, at which he exclaimed, "God darn[sic] you."

(edited date for the nitpicky, what's a couple years among friends?)

What did they do with George V do for two years?

Experience the World through Numismatics...it's more than you can imagine.

  • << King George V , who was inconveniently lingering in a lousy state of health, was euthanized by the royal physician with a dose of morphine and cocaine (a speedball!) in 1936. It was timed so that the death could make the morning edition of The Times . (Those were the days when newspapers had some clout!) >> From the link.

This was done to stop the disruptable afternoon tabloids from getting a scoop on the respectable The Times.

Maybe that's what inspired "Weekend at Bernie's."

geez, it was just a typo. the fact he was euthanized was the point of the post, though I could understand why the thought of regicide would annoy a dead king.

All joking aside, I had no idea he was euthanized. Very interesting.

I read that recently and add that to my 'cool British Royalty facts' list.

I've been slogging through a Victoria book for some time, though my real fascination started with Charlotte. Charlotte as in -- if only the obstetrician had made different choices and the Prince might have lived and Victoria would never have ruled and added her hemophilia mutation to the other European royal houses and history would have been totally different-- Charlotte. Isn't OB grand!

So, euthanasia...it's what we do to protect royal dignity apparently. Yikes!

That, in my opinion is taking the easy way out. I can't help but feel that a more proper way of dealing with this unpleasant matter (which you should know HAS been reported to the higher-up's at PCGS) would be to send a BU George V Sovereign to each member who has posted in this thread!

Making sure they are dated 1917 would also be a nice touch.

You stay out of this! These negotiations are still in a stage that can only be described as "delicate" at this point and the last thing we need is some Shroom-man coming along and setting us back to a Half Sovereign before the enemy has even had a chance to reply.
