The power of perfect centering...

1958 Jimmy Brown PSA 6

Went for twice normal selling price!
Went for more than most PSA 7 have sold for!

Would have loved to have added it to my collection, but wow.

WOW! Might be time for me to sell my 5.5. Slight centering shift to the top but some of the best registration I have seen on a Brown card.

  • Wow That is very eye appealing centering.

Sorry Bobby, nice 5.5, but not in the same league as the centered ones.

The scanner did away with the period thanks to my dust removal feature. I am sorry, I think that 5.5 looks really strong. If you look at the brown background it is really nice, even compared to the '8' that was scanned. Usually you see a lot of trash and crap in it. And the registration is dead on. No double image or blurring. And the centering isn't too shabby either.

I spoke with a Beckett rep a few months ago and he told me that the BVG grading includes the usual 4 subs, plus an overall eye appeal sub that the bgs does not have. Thus, you will see a card grade a 7 that is centered, but may have a rough corner or two versus a PSA 7 that could be 65-35 centered with one corner slightly less bothered. They assume that the eye appeal for a card could/should garner a grade or so higher. Just their take, not a bad idea. I think the collectors agree at least with this Jim brown.image

I can't say for sure, but it's also very possible that the "dust removal feature" on your scanning program also removed a lot of the "trash and crap" from the black background on your card. Still, that's a nice Jim Brown RC.

from a presentation perspective that PSA 5 looks really nice aside from the obvious flaws and i'd choose it over the PSA 8 given the potential cost involved.

i guess some people do buy the card and not the holder.

No - it doesn't change the background color. It just gets rid of loose 'trash'. It thinks the dot is trash. I bought the Brown raw and I paid a premium for it, due to the registration, centering, and a nice solid brown background. I thought it was going to grade higher than it did, although I am not surprised by the grade.

Off topic but what is in the background of the Jim Brown card? Almost looks like he just ran out of Sherwood Forrest....

That 5.5 is a beautiful card for the reasons you state. The solidness of the black is definitely rare for this card.

My 5 I also got raw and subbed it myself. I like my 8 but that 5 is near the top of my favorite Jimmy cards.
