It's a possibility, and kind of a threat.

Imagine if someone worth a lot of money, started hoarding slabbed coins. When I mean money, I mean Bill Gates or Carlos Slim kind of rich.

Rich people can collect coins just like we can, nothing stops them.

But imagine what it would do to prices if they did that, I mean hoarding coins by the 10s of thousands.

Virgil Brand. It took 50ish years to disperse that collection. He had well over 300,000 coins and many many rarities. 5 1827 quarters, 2 strawberry leafs I think, and on and on...

What exactly is the threat? Why would a very wealth individual who horded coins be a threat to the coin collecting community?

I have always secretly wished Oprah would someday talk about the merits of XF civil war tokens and the masses would go nuts and all the ones I bought years ago would now be worth 100 fold and...I dont know, it wouldnt be such a bad thing image

If the hoard came entirely from the Coin Vault, they'd be doing us all a favor.

if i had unlimited funds, i would invest in something with a better return. would be rather difficult to convince a rich person to invest in something like slabbed coins when there are so many other investment opportunities that present a better return in less time.
regardless of how many posts I have, I don't consider myself an "expert" at anything
  • Ebaybuyer is correct. If the 1 percent thought coins were a great investment, there wouldn't be any left for us 99 percenters to buy.

The one percenters are smart enough to know better than to venture beyond the top .50% of all coins where potential gain is concerned. Unless they happen to have OCD, and even then they will be likely to already have a system of checks and balances in order.

His scenario fits the Wall Street Money coming into the market about 20 years ago. It didn't make a blip on the screen. I don't think somebody with money would start hoarding slabbed coins. They would be smart enough to do their homework and know they need investment grade rarities in order to make a large enough return on their time and money.

Wall street money did make more than a blip on the market. I was involved at that time and slabbed coins took off.

Get a blue sheet or greysheet from 1989 and compare price to today. What you find will be shocking.

Yes, because the uber-rich have nothing better to do than worry about coin collecting. I mean honestly, to some people, the entire world's population of 1 million dollar plus coins is still a drop in the bucket, and the rest, just aren't worth their time.

I think that such a collector would focus on extreme rarities like the 1933 Double Eagle, 1913 V Nickel, etc.

What did Farouk collect? (besides women)
