Eric Newman Sale

The EAC electronic newsletter announced this morning that McCawley-Grellman will be selling the Newman large cents in 2014. I don't know what's in there (any copperites among us have inside info?), but it's probably good whatever it is.
After Garrett, Norweb, Eliasberg, Pittman, and Ford, this is about the last of the great "old-time" collections. Some of the "new-time" collections may actually be higher in dollar value than all of these combined, but it still won't be quite the same.......

<< <i> I am on pins and needles awaiting these coins coming on the market - it will be great for numismatics. >>
Yes indeed. MJ
Fellas, leave the tight pants to the ladies. If I can count the coins in your pockets you better use them to call a tailor. Stay thirsty my friends......
<< <i>IMO, It is somewhat scary that a lot of the big guns are getting out of it. I don't really know what to think of all of the sales in the last few years. >>
Eric can be excused. He is 99 years old. There are always big sales. It's a positive thing IMO.
correction he is 100 years old

He's older than that.
Well, just Love coins, period.
About 25 years ago I had the chance to break a meal with Eric. I didn't know he collected coins . I didn't collect at the time as I barely had two nickels to rub together nor was I interested.

I don't think so. This one should be amazing, but I'm sure we will see other amazing things to come.

I give away money. I collect money.
I don’t love money . I do love the Lord God.
I suggest he sell his home and get a 2nd job, cut up his wife's credit cards, and pull his 2 kids from college.
He is thinking about all of the above.

I first met Eric at Coin World in the mid-70's. At the time I was a young nobody just getting started and he was as kind and gracious to me as he would have been to a Rockefeller.

It is my believe that many of these coins haven't seen the light of day for many decades and thus haven't been subjected to some of the unscrupulous practices of the later twentieth and early twentyfirst century. Not to mention that once some of these pieces are sold it may be decades before they become available again.

I hope that in honor of his sale, the auction house sits down and talks with Mr. Newman for hours about coins and collecting and then makes the interviews public. It would be exceedingly cool to hear his thoughts on many numismatic issues.

<< <i>I would love to pick up something from this sale even though I will probably have to go outside my comfort zone type wise

I would be in the same boat. I doubt to find any Mercury Dimes in an early copper sale.

<< <i>I truly hope the coins will be sold raw. Seems appropriate. I also hope Mr. N attends the auctions.

That would be truly old school and an experience a lot of us have not witnessed. Me for sure. That would be awesome

I'm not sure that would maximize the prices though. You need to have a TPG put their stamp of approval on the coin along with the pedigree. If this is done then Internet bidders will come out in full force! It will allow others beyond the professional big time dealers to make a pseudo-half-assed comparison between these pieces and others that have sold in the same grade range. It will provide MORE people with the confidence to open their wallets and bid. My opinion of course.

Many of his colonials are high in the condition census, if not finest knowns, I can't believe his federals will be too shabby.
I also believe that most of the stuff will draw moon money, but I guess we'll have to wait and see.
Any guesses as to what kind of premium will be attached to such pieces?

<< <i>The collection is being auctioned for charity. I think it fantastic that these coins will be in collectors' hands rather than locked up in a museum. >>
I see it the opposite way. In collector hands the coin will be locked away from public view and there's potential for doctoring activity.
<< <i>along the same line- who knows anything about the Missouri cabinet sale next

Well, coin collections are like governments. The best model is the "benevolent dictator." In government that is the guy with absolute power who uses it wisely. In collecting it is the collector with strong hands who doesn't mess with their coins and allows researchers and serious collectors to access them.
Institutional coins are OK, but subject to theft, switching, and going "missing." I can't tell you how many institutional catalog records I've looked at where the catalog record says "missing." An individual collector would never tolerate this in their collection. Institutions will. The flip side is that institutional coins are generally more available for study.
