since Babe Ruth is no longer living, ......... it has to be Barry Bonds as he is the 2nd Best Player Ever!
  • I grew up in the 1970's and was 7 when Hank hit #715 - I still remember watching it on tv (a special bedtime dispensation from my mother) and still consider it one of the highlights of my childhood. He was an idol and role model then, and to this day still stands as a role model for anyone. He has carried himself with dignity and grace, and his standing within the game demands the respect that he has rightfully earned. Jeffv - I cannot expound any further on the arguments you have made regarding him.

If we are to consider the men who wore this unofficial crown before him (DiMaggio, Williams, Musial), there is no question that Aaron deserves it now. Even if Pete Rose never placed a single bet, I don't think he would come close to touching Aaron's place within the game. I think Mays would be #2, and a non-betting Pete Rose #3. Since Pete did bet on baseball, I would have to go with Nolan Ryan third.

Today's, and the near yesterday players - Ripken, Schmidt, or Maddux would wear that crown well.
