Cheap newps.

Went to a coin auction today. Nothing fancy, but too cheap to pass up. Unc morgan, couple encased cents (I love local ones), some mixed wheats, a 1907 Germany Silver 1/2 Mark (was in with the wheats), a dateless SLQ.

Anyone else have any "good luck" encased cents they would like to share?

What's on the reverse of the round encased?

    Looks like you had fun
  • The horseshoe encased one reads:

    King Drugs Co.

    Phone 158

    East Side Square

    Canton, ILL

    The round one:

    Bader Motor Co., Inc

    248 North Main Street

    Canton, ILL

I like both pieces. The horseshoe has been carried for a long time, wearing down the unc cent that would of been placed in it.

The round one is nice because it's like new.

You might be surprised at the value of the round one. Chevrolet had a promotion in 1948, where lots of their dealers gave out encased cents with the dealer's info on it. People collect them. I have no idea which are the rare ones, but some of them bring a lot more money than other random encaseds from the 1920s or later. Some of the high value pieces can be rationalized. I mean, really, who wouldn't want a piece from Spitsnaugle Chevrolet? Others are harder to fathom -- I have no idea why Springfield, Ohio would be special. And a lot of others sell for low prices more typical of non-Chevrolet pieces.

If I understood the pricing, I'd be buying them for sure. As it is, I sit back and wonder...
