Bankrupt Curt Schilling sells bloody sock

Pretty sad to think he made such a dumb investment as to have gone bankrupt. Sold his bloody sock from the '04 WS for $418k.

Sounds like he got a pretty good price for a bloody sock.

At least he is trying to pay off some of what he owes.

    He is in deep do-do.

Why somebody would want a sweaty, bloody sock is beyond me. Paying nearly half-a-mil for it is even sillier..... I realize it was a monumental game, but I think i would rather pay a quarter of that for the game ball. You think maybe a card company bought it and is slicing and dicing it for packs??

I have zero sympathy for these stupid athletes who make millions and then retire in poverty.

I agree totally, let me just say that Schill looked to be one of the last guys I thought would end up losing his millions but again the 2 things that end up being a bad mix for former athletes are in play here... #1-Greed #2 The feeling of invincibilty when it comes to a challenge

Also shame on the State of Rhode Island for entertaining such a gamble!

    What an idiot!

And the guy who bought the sock is an even BIGGER idiot!!!

He earned a bit more than $114 million in his 19 year career. He is well under 50 years old, having been born in 1966, it is truly mind-boggling that he could blow that kind of money. Imagine how thrilled you'd be to have just a paltry little ole $1 million...he had more than 114 !!!

    Crazy stuff !!!

I collect Vintage Cards, Commemorative Sets, and way too many vintage and modern player collections in Baseball (180 players), Football (175 players), and Basketball (87 players). Also have a Dallas Cowboy team collection.

The beyond insanity part of Schilling being bankrupt at the age of 46, is that in his last 5 years as a MLB player, he earned $60.5m...if you figure he had to give half to Uncle Sam, that's $30.25m (NET) that went into the dumper somehow. Wouldn't the prudent person put say $10m in a "rainy day" fund? The bottom line is that somehow he whizzed away the equivalent of some $500k (NET) per month in his last 5 years, 2004 to 2008.

Don't mean to harp on the coin, but it is pretty amazing.

Pathetic all the way around. Pathetic he spent it all and pathetic some IDIOT paid that much for a sock.

I have mentioned before there are a couple of mid-level retired NBA players in my neighborhood. They probably both made $30m-40m in their careers. I see them a lot as our kids play sports together. I saw one today at our kid's basketball games. They appear to live a VERY GOOD life. Not ridiculously extravagant but they both live in $1m +/- houses, drive nice cars, go on a lot of vacations, etc.... It's not that hard to retire and live WELL. As stated above put $10mil in the bank and then coast! You don't need 5 houses; 1 or 2 is enough. You don't need 5 sports cars; 1 is enough. Any money earned from a job, or autographs, or whatever is just gravy!

Ok enough of you guys calling the buyer of the bloody sock an idiot, you sound absolutely ridiculas.

400K to some people is like a 20 dollar card to you or me and in some cases its like a $1 card so please enough.

If you can't spell ridiculous, then you probably shouldn't use it in your posts. It makes you sound.....

    Hey Cowboysfan79...

I think I'd give Perkdog a pass on something as miniscule as a typo...I think he made his point. Perkdog, BTW, is, IMO one of the more well informed posters on these boards on a variety of topics. This is evidenced by his well over 14,000 posts...better to not be known as a nit-picking board hawk so early in your time here.

I'd be more concerned with your inept team under the astute leadership of one Jerry Jones. Wouldn't let a mere "ridiculas...or is it reediculus, I kinda forgot myself, bother me very much.

So he invested EVERYTHING he had in a business? What was this business?

If you want to know how Schilling lost his money (and allegedly 75 million of the State of Rhode Island's money), Wikipedia him.

Whatever, in MY opinion Schilling is an idiot for putting all his eggs in one basket and the person that bought the sock, no matter how wealthy they are, is also an idiot. Each is entitled to his own opinion but to me it's pretty easy to put $10m aside, live a nice life. As for the sock purchaser Schilling was not a HOF player. He was an above average player with a few good seasons and a limited following; and certainly not well liked. To me that's not whose bloody sock I would want to buy. However, I realize you can't spell fanatic without fan so to each his own.

<< <i>Geez, you guys are harsh. I'm sure most of us have lost enough money in one way or another to elicit people calling us idiots. Schilling invested in a business he believed in, created employment for dozens of people along the way, and it didn't pan out. He didn't spend it on high class hookers, entourages or buying private jets. He took a shot at the American dream and it went bust. Happens all the time. If everyone who had plenty enough money decided to just live comfortably and not take risk, the American economy would go down the toilet practically overnight,as it would only be left with 95%+ truly idiots who don't know how to build a business or do nothing but collect paychecks and follow blindly and create no value on their own independent of the real entrepreneurs. I'll sadly throw myself in with that pathetic lot, and probably most all of you as well. >>

I can agree to a point however it was absolutely irresponsible to leave himself with no "outs". There is nothing wrong with a plan for a bussiness involving risk but you need to have a proper back up plan, and it looks like schill didnt have one, now his family is going to suffer as well as the city of Rhode Island.

As far as the guy who bought the sock, if your a Boston Red Sox fan you know that its part of the greatest story in Red Sox history, the 2004 ALCS series and any Red Sox fan would agree.

<< <i>So he invested EVERYTHING he had in a business? What was this business? >>

You seriously don't know the story? He bought a video game company and then ran it into the ground, blowing $75m from the state of Rhode Island and $50m of his own cash. The wastefulness and outright stupidity involved is truly mind-boggling.
