Also, who was that Yankee prospect who got into a fight and broke his hand? Never made it to the majors. >>
Brian Taylor, but I think he was a Mets prospect. >>
Brien was a *highly* rated Yankees prospect.
+ 1 for JR Richard
Did you know after being forced into retirement, was homeless for a while and slept under one of our freeways (US 59)?
So basically my kid won't be able to go to college, but at least I'll have a set where the three most expensive cards are of a player I despise ~ CDsNuts

Thanks for the catch. I guess I relate most pitching phenom busts with the Mets for some reason.
Yeah, JR is a sad story.

<< <i>Ted Kluszewski Rocky Colavito Ken Hubbs Lyman Bostock >>
Hubbs was an awful offensive player. His OPS+ was 70. He died young, but he had a long way to go to get to average.
Bostock was a good player, but had an extremely short resume. I doubt he would have made the Hall.
I was not aware that Coavito and Klu had injury problems. I was aware tht Klu had some monster seasons early then tailed off at an early age. What happened to them?

Nary an instance passes by when I fail to think about him while driving over 59 @ Beechnut. Extrapolate his 4.5-year stretch in the late 70's and you have some pretty gaudy numbers.
Someone mentioned Billy Sims above, and that is a great one. He only played for like four years before tearing up his knee on that terrible Metrodome turf, but he had more rushing yards than Gale Sayers. One of the best RB's I've seen, and sadly largely forgotten. Good thing he won the Heisman, or he would be just a footnote.
<< <i>paul molitor is a hofer and did rack up 3319 career hits
but he missed over 600 games in his career
give him those games and he likely has over 4000 career hits >>
Similar to this, Frank Thomas, though a likely HOFer in the very near future, could have had 3000 hits had he not lost so many years. He was just 5 doubles shy of 500 too; not to mention what his HR totals could have been.
I noticed someone else listed NBA player Brad Daugherty
He was an Owen High School graduate, like myself.....In fact, our school turned out a player in each of the 'Big 3' sports that had great (albeit shortened) careers:
Daugherty Sammy Stewart (MLB) Brad Johnson (NFL)
Stewart would have been great if he could have stayed clean
2nd Choice: Ronnie Milsap///40 #1 hits and can't make the country music hall of fame.
Why was Elvis not the 1st inductee in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? What could his HOF career been without drugs? Probably the most popular and successful artist in history and wasted more than half of his career.
McHenry was an outfielder who hit .350 with power and speed at age 25 in 1921 and then a brain tumor ended his life in 1922.
DeLancey was a catcher who came down with tuburculosis at age 23 in 1935 after seasons hitting .316 and .279. Branch Rickey named his as his all time Cardinal catcher despite only playing 219 games. He died in 1946at age 35 after attempting a comeback which failed in 1940
Both players would have been stars during times when the Cardinals were perenial contenders, and in an era which is way overpopulated with Hall of Famers.
I don't know if he qualifies but I'll throw in Leon Wagner. He was stuck behind Mays in SF and Musial in STL... he did OK with the Angels and Cleveland but I can't help but feel that baseball shortchanged him somehow. And so did he; in fact his bitterness ended up contributing to substance abuse that led to him dying broke and homeless. Any thoughts?

<< <i>And Cooperstown is a joke until Pete Rose is there. >>
How is Cooperstown a joke when Pete himself agreed to the banishment? You can't be there when you're banished and YOU'VE agreed to the banishment.
I understand Pete's contributions and he's a Hall of Famer by all descriptions, but the Hall isn't keeping Pete out, Pete has kept Pete out.

Which leads me to wonder about how Deion Sanders might have fared had he played baseball full time.
