Some great stuff here in this thread. Here is my contribution: an unused ticket to the Orioles vs Cuban National team from 2002:

    image

Here is a lttle bit about the game that I just pulled off the internet:

May 3, 1999 -- In an embarrassing performance at the historical sequel, the struggling Baltimore Orioles lost 12-6 giving them a split in the series. The Orioles whose American League worst 7-17 record and an outrageous payroll of $78 million, were completely outplayed by a Cuban team whose players make a total of about $2,250.
The Cuban All-Stars banged out 18 hits in front of loud, flag-waving fans of 47,940 at Camden Yards. They played Latin music over the public address system, served black beans and rice at Boog's Bar-B-Q Pit and even staged a Cuban festival behind the bullpen area. Also, security was increased just like in Havana, there were dozens of uniformed police positioned throughout the ballpark.

The Orioles opened the scoring in the first on Harold Baines' two-run double but the Cuban All-Stars took the lead for good with four runs in the second off starter Scott Kamieniecki.

Daniel Castro, who finished with four hits and scored four times, had a two-run triple and first base man Calvin Pickering committed one of his three errors to lead to another run. "It was apparent they wanted it more than we did" said Orioles manager Ray Miller.

The crowd at Camden Yards started booing and then came the real slugfest in the fifth inning.

After three protesters ran into the outfield and were arrested, a man jumped onto the field down the right-field line. Carrying a sign that said, "Freedom -- Strike Out Against Castro," he headed toward short center.

But Valdez, one of three Cubans on the six-man umpiring crew, took exception and charged after the fan. They tangled briefly, then Valdez lifted the fan over his head and threw him down to the ground hard. Valdez began swinging, and appeared to land a couple of blows to the man's head, before Orioles left fielder B.J. Surhoff rushed in and pulled Valdez off.

Police said the four people who ran onto the field -- all from Miami -- were arrested on a charge of trespassing. At least one of the protesters wore a T-shirt that said, "40 Years Is Too Much," an apparent reference to Fidel Castro's leadership of Cuba. As police led one fan past the Cuban dugout and the Cuban delegation, he yelled at them while the Cubans booed and gave him the thumbs-down sign.

The game continued and Norge Vera held the Orioles without a hit until the ninth. He retired 20 of the 22 batters he faced before allowing two singles and Delino DeShields' three-run homer in the final inning. The Orioles pitchers never retired the Cubans in order, and Baltimore fielders made three errors. Albert Belle went 0-for-3 and struck out twice.

The Cubans tacked on five runs in the ninth against rookie Gabe Molina, highlighted by Andy Morales' three-run homer.

Unlike in Havana, where Castro sat in a front-row box, there was no obvious presence of American government officials. U.S. Senators Christopher Dodd, Patrick Leahy and Paul Sarbanes attended, but sat in private boxes on upper levels.

Commissioner Bud Selig said four teams have asked about playing against the Cuban All-Stars next year.

The following day (5/4/99), six Cubans, who are former baseball players, overslept and missed their plane, which left at 6 a.m. without them. They were planning to catch another flight home today or Wednesday. "We have no defectors," spokesman Luis Fernandez told The Associated Press. "I have no information that there are any defect

  • This is by far, my favorite Orioles card, in my collection:

Back in I beleive 2002, I flew to Baltimore to see the first interleague games between the Dodgers & Orioles. The things I remember most was what a beautiful stadium Camden Yards was, the large building out past left field, the short walk over to where Babe Ruth was born, and my drive into Washington DC. It was my first and only time I have been able to visit that area.

  • Very impressive stuff guys. Awesome Ripken collection Jeff. Loving the PSA 10's along with the sealed Ripkens on top.

This one was self submitted. I knew it was a lock for a 9 when I had purchased it. Its my only graded card of an Orioles player.

Great thread. I really like the run of Gem Mint 10 Ripkens. For some reason, I always like the 88 Topps Ripken and the set in general. I know it is massed prodcued, but the pictures always looked so clean to me.
